Does the machine display any errors or requestors before dropping you at the command prompt?  Typically, I'd expect it to look like:

AMIGA ROM Operating System and Libraries
Copyright 1985-whatever
All Rights Reserved.

Does yours look like this, or have other stuff?

What does typing the following command print....

sys:c/cd

and does

sys:c/dir

call up a listing that shows directories like C, S, Libs, Prefs, Utilities, etc....?

Maybe your computer is trying to boot from something other than the partition you installed Workbench to?

It could be Workbench was installed to a partition with lower boot-priority than another. You must go into the early startup-menu and check the boot priorities of your hard-drive. By judging your problem it sounds you are booting from an empty partition, try to type in dir[enter] and try to give us the output.

If the boot-priorities are wrong, you can manually override them in the early-startup-menu each time you reboot, to change them permanently you must use hdtoolbox.

To get into the early-startup-menu hold down both mouse buttons during reset.

Did you copy paste the link posted ? You should check if the startup-sequence is "executable", if it's not Amiga Dos won't run it. (Tho checking that is easiest in Workbench..)

Try "protect s:startup-sequence +e" and reboot, or firts try "execute s:startup-sequence"

What does it say if you "protect it" ?

Delete or rename the startup-sequence, and make a new one. To test, only take the needed lines (setpatch quit, loadwb, endcli).. Again, type execute s:startup-sequence.

I may be mistaken, but I think execute needs the +e flag set as well.. (protect filename +e)

Is there an startup-sequence.info ?

Can you try to load WB ? Just type setpatch and after that loadwb.. Either close the cli with endci or minimize (sp?) it.

Go to the drive where you put WB, select show all files, go to the "s" directory and look for the startup-sequence. Select it and select "information" from the menu (or press A + i)

You should be able to make the changes there, off course, only if my guess is right about the protection bit that is...

He didn't have a bootable workbench floppy anymore as well.. And the install does need the workbench floppy, if the one you use isn't working you can forget about installing.

the install diskettes make all the job.

Well, if the install f*cked up first time, he may as well have a f*cked up install disk..
