Making my Amiga 500 a running machine
« on: April 29, 2004, 11:05:38 AM »
Hello,

I have standing here an Amiga 500 without adapter, without cables. Is it posseble to connect an AT power supply to the Amiga? And is it possible to connect the RGB exit to a PC monitor? Otherwise to a SCART cable? And can I make a paralell / serial network with my Amiga <-> PC? And most of all: where can I find information on how to do this (datasheets, PDF, HTML...)???

Best place to start is Aminet esp the Hard/hack area for hardware fixes you require.

See http://de.aminet.net/

Yes, I did it many years ago but I don't have that info handy any more. Try a search on the net. Here is one link Amiga/PC PSU If I recall correctly, you can also use a C128 power supply for the A500. The power rating is lower, but as long as you don't connect expansions like external floppies and such, it will do the job for a basic A500.

Not directly. You would have to buy a "scandoubler" to connect an A500 directly to a PC monitor. As a quick solution attach the composite video output to a VCR, then the VCR output to a TV. The picture resolution is poor of course, but it will do until you find a cheap "flicker fixer" or scandoubler. Check here Amiga Hardware and choose flicker fixers and doublers from the list to learn more about them and the different models. Then maybe you can find one for sale in a search.

Try this utility from aminet Twin 1.1. You will have to make your own cable, but it allows file transfer between PC and Amiga. It's not realy a "network" share, just file swapping.

And if your handy building your own projects, you might have a look at this.... IDE for A500

Good Luck.

You can also put the amiga RGB output to the SCART input of your tv/vcr
here you can find out how. (trouble can be to find a 23pin connector, these aren't standard anymore)

You do need the DB-23 for the video. The last time I checked Javanco in Nashville, Tn had them(although I heard a rumor they went out of business), Astro Too in Melbourne, Fl had them, and Skycraft in Orlando, Fl had them.

Of course, the composite will work in black and white
with any VCR or tv with video inputs, and you could probably
find someone that will pay you to take their A520 off
their hands.

a what? They don't say that in those documents :S They say it's a syncdoubler, and when I read, they say it's for connecting the rgb out to a vga monitor! :S

The DB23 to VGA adapters will let you connect Amigas that are capable of 31kh scan frequency, like the A1200 and A4000 to a VGA monitor as long as you select the correct screen mode. A stock A500 can't do 31kh. IF you have a multisync monitor equipted with a VGA connector that can do 15kh(native A500 freq) Then the DB23 adapter would be useful. Other wise a commodore compatible monitor(1084, 1942,1960, multisync...), the VCR trick, or scandoublers are some of your options.

Never heard of the scart connector here in the states, thanks for the info. Maybe it's a Netherlands, Euro exclusive.

I'm using an AppleColor RGB monitor on an A2000 and it seemed to work with an A500.  Nothing fancy.  It's just a cable where you connect pin A on the Amigs to pin B on the monitor.

If there were a way to connect an Amiga to a VGA monitor, I'm sure a lot of Apple IIgs users would be tripping over themselves to figure out how to adapt it for their machine!

Hmm, I bet they're all lying flat on their faces, then? Scandoublers have existed on the Amiga for a very long time.

There's also totally external boxes for video game use (yes, RGB doublers too, not just composite/s-video)

http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?category=219&products_id=2875&

The scart connector on the box is Japanese, not Euro, so you need to rewire your scarts.

when I read that, that's a way to make a syncdoubler YOURSELF, isn't it?

Damn, I can't open the *.pic files, not with Paint Shop Pro or anything :-( Is there a special viewer or something??? (for the PC ;-))

Don't have money for that you know. Also no money for an Amiga 1200, I'm 15 years old you know (yes and I wanna use Amiga :-D), my pocket money is 20 euro per month and I just bought an expensive MiniDisc Player  :-)  So I wanna try to fix the old Amiga 500 ;-)

ftp://de.aminet.net/pub/aminet/hard/hack/Syncdoubler.lha

would work?  :-o
