Run Windows Update as soon as possible.  15 vulnerabilities, and a patch for all of them were released today.

The MS and WU sites are totally swamped at the moment as well.  I got a friend in the US to download it for me, and I'm downloading it from his machine currently.  Transatlantic connectivity is taking a hit though I think.

MS, can you say "worldwide load balancing"? :-)

Cheers, I'll try and get that done this weekend.

Probably can't do it any sooner because we're getting a new PC tomorrow or Friday which means I've to install a whole load of stuff on the new hd :-(

Important things first though - internet, Opera, GetRight and Winamp :-D

Oh and I suppose I'd better chuck in the firewall and AVG too!

Windows update is not responding, too busy. Guess I'll have to wait later to patch Microsoft's incompet...er, bugs.

Don't bother, whabang. Even with 512k internet I can't get through, and I've been trying for about 30 min. And America hasn't even woken up yet properly. It might be ages before you can get the update.

I'd think twice about applying these patches.

I used to apply new patches religiously, then I hit that well publicised buggy patch that slowed the entire system down by 10x.  Applying the fixed fix made no difference, and now even today, almost 1 year on, my Athlon 2800XP is less responsive than an Amiga 600.

Before you apply a patch - wait a while, then do a search with the patch number on the net for any problems.

Yeah, that was the well renound pre-SP1 keyboard patch or something similar that just screwed up some peoples machines, but that was a one off and hasn't happened again...

Speaking on patches and viruses and such, How Vunerable are Macintosh's to viruses and hack attacks? My laptop (Which I use as a web server also) is a Macintosh. Im wondering what virus protection software is out there for it. :-?

It's slow, but I'm downloading it (patch for Windows XP, swedish and english versions) now. Anyone else wants it? I can mirror it.

It took me a couple minutes to download, without a hitch... :-?

"Not very".  I'm under the impression that a default Mac install is a little less vulnerable than the average Linux distro install, and a good bit less than a default Windows install (though that last part isn't very difficult at all).

Against a decently configured Windows install (and no MS apps installed/in use), I think Windows comes out on top.  Though a decently configured Windows install versus a decent MacOS setup, dunno.
