C128D's going in for repair!
« on: August 16, 2026, 12:36:53 AM »
Last year I had repair tech Ray Carlsen install a North American power supply, convert to 64K video RAM, and fix a disk drive problem on my plastic, European Commodore 128D.  Since that time, I've exhibited it at various shows, and it has worked perfectly with a Dell U2410 multiscan monitor.

This November I bring more for Ray to repair!  The plastic C128D returns to him for the C128 upgrade ROMs and the 1571 upgrade ROM.  Also I will bring in my club's flat C128 for him to upgrade its ROMs and to bring it up to 64K video RAM.  Not only that but I bring him three, metal C128DCR's that were given to me by Al Jackson, former president of the defunct Clark County Commodore Computer Club (of Las Vegas).  The cases and keyboards were covered in desert dust, and so, I'll have Ray check them out.  For sure, a disk drive head clean and drive rail lubrication.  One keyboard has two, non-working keys.  And some of the cases have holes drilled in them for various, extra switches; those will have to be investigated and checked for functionality.

What else can I bring Ray to repair?  Another power supply upgrade for a 1541 drive?  Maybe I can dig out some C64's for him to check out (like earlier this year when he diagnosed bad RAM in a C64C short-board model.  He said that was the first time he had seen bad RAM in a short board, because those didn't go bad.)  Maybe my personal, metal C128DCR for a power supply upgrade?

Will be interested how you get on. I too have a C128D. I believe Jiffy ROMs are a must.
So will like to know how you get on.
Can the C128D have an internal RAM upgrade? I.e for GEOS.

There is a method to give it up 256K RAM internally.  However, GEOS will not recognize it.  I only know of one program that can access the extra internal RAM... the Zed 0.77 text editor.
