E-UAE WIP4 running on Sony PSP
« on: June 03, 2026, 02:43:21 AM »
Finally got it to boot and display sort of a kickstart screen. Hard part is finally over, boots with no errors, :).

I know what I'm doing tomorrow. Fixing it so it displays properly, then will start on adding mouse / joystick support, then menus.

Now have sound and gfx working correctly. Just profiling code, so I can increase speed as is currently quite slow.

OK, so I have been spinning gears on this for last few days.
Getting fed up of not being able to shift the CPU usage, even with framskip.

After hours of tweaks for PSP hardware. I finally realised, after adding auto frameskip.
I looked at E-UAE homepage and found out, there was no auto frameskip, hence me adding it.
However, it turned out frameskip is just broke. For last week I have been optimising and tweaking, using different FS settings, without realising, every test was with FS stuck on 1.

Currently up to 45 FPS running bubble bobble, it feels quite smooth. I have added buffer to sound to improve it for testing.
Currently, CPU load is around 120% at around 45 FPS. Which is pretty good considering, When I started it was 200%+ at 17 FPS.

Will get Frameskip fixed, as its important.

So rewrote GFX backend. Had it working fairly decent. Pixel perfect 4:3, 16:9 stretch. Then I stupidly messed up source and forgot to backup.

So spent last 4 days, re-writing it all again. Have to be fair, glad I did. We now have;
1, 4:3 pixel perfect & 16:9 stretch.
2, Autozoom (both 4:3 and 16:9), incase you wonder what it is. It only draws to the screen the actual amiga content. Meaning no bands around screen.
3, Mask effects. Currently, there are 3 (1=scanlines, 2=rgb apeture and 3=Shadow mask).

I will leave it there. As I'm getting way side tracked. GFX-PSP Backend is complete.

As a side project, since February I have been working on mips JIT.
I'm almost at a point to start passing instructions, so I'm hopeful, soon we will have JIT support.

I could really do with some beta testers.
As I can only test so much.

I now have JIT working, just need to debug and optimise as its really slow.

Spent all weekend at getting JIT running correctly. On home stretch now. Its about 99.5% done.
I know its all working as its actually reusing JIT blocks from RAM, however its not from ROM area and that's killing speed.
Figures crossed, I get it working tonight.

Also spent some time on Inputs. Wired PSP control stuff into E-UAE, so it see's all controls and buttons and you can configure them using current E-UAE config.

I think a full on GUI is next on list.

Its now 99.9% done.
JIT system is working 100% as it should, just slow. Reason turns out the counter to decide to reuse ROM stuff compiled blocks is stuck on 0. Meaning it never reuses the JIT blocks, so no JIT path for those. However, RAM stuff compiled blocks JIT fine. So while logging shows, it checks the ROM blocks 35million times in a 5 min test, 0 are used. Compared to RAM blocks, where 29 are used.

Just need to workout issue with counter. Then everything should JIT.

Now have JIT promoting all blocks. However I'm getting proper amiga crashes.
JIT handler is jumping to garbage data and crashing. So debugging that now. Almost there, last hurdle, :).
Be happy once this is done, been on it for over a week, since getting to running-ish state.

Well another few days and Im so close I can taste it.
So frustrating, been on this a long time now.
Down to last exception (I hope), last errors were caused by flag system I made, was not quite right. Fixed that and a cache alignment issue. So fingers crossed for tonight.

Disappointed, no one is interested in this any more (considering PSP scene is going through a sort of revival). Could really use testers.
I did disable jit and debugging, compiled for normal eboot and have to say Im quite impressed of how its currently working (JIT will just be icing on cake, game changer). Even at FS=3 it plays lotus pretty damn decent (couldn't even tell it was FS'ing), and the on the fly filter I added makes picture look stunning. PSP Go!, has an awesome display, which also helps.

If I get no joy with JIT tonight, I will disable for now. Hardest part of the work is done, just tracking down last bugs.
I need to get to work on ME stuff, sort sound backend, confirm Joypad and buttons + nub are all working correctly, via config file. I also need to create GUI. Then I would say its in a state to release as beta, think way past alpha stage.

I have put JIT to one side for now. Its technically there, just trying to get JIT blocks from outside user memory.
So will come back to it.

I decided to focus on getting ME up and running with newly released ME libraries.
Plan is to have it act as like a coprocessor, taking load off main CPU.
Just reached point of running code on ME, while PSPUAE V2 runs. Next is to start moving uae stuff over to ME.

Like JIT, this is important to help with speed, it also opens the door for a lot of cool stuff.
Once I get HDF and ISO working, I can then add CDDA, thanks to new libraries.

EDIT:- Gave in and done some more work on JIT. Hopefully will resolve, but will still hold and test after finishing, kernel and ME audio work.

Well I stopped working on JIT, last Saturday.

Since then been working on using ME. Have all mixer and output stuff running on ME, however its not giving the speed increase I would expect. So I will now be using the DMA, Interrupts and shared cache features to move paula audio entirely to ME, whereby freeing up CPU of any audio stuff. Tricky part will be maintaining timing, and scheduling events and writing directly to chip ram.

In the background, I have been doing little bits on JIT. Will continue it as side project. Flag system is only headache with that.

Im pretty happy with the way its turned out, so far games like lotus, Turrican 2 etc etc are running pretty well.
I had to implement Auto FS, as E-UAE doesnt have Auto FS. Currently working on adding old PSPUAE FS, as that is one of the best features of old pspuae. Stops FS thrashing around causing audio to glitch. Yes, I fixed audio crackling, popping and gaps on last pspuae 0.95 Beta 26.

So far, we have awesome GFX backend. That allows filters, will be like WinUAE filter / mask system in the future.
If I can get ME working right, we will have an awesome audio backend, that will also do MP3 in menu's and CDDA for CD32 games in the future.

Main things left to do;
1- GUI,
2- OSK Keyboard,
3- ISO and HDF,
4- fix controller support. Its wired into E-UAE core, just need to work it all out,
5- Fix mouse movement,
6- Do all new pics for eboot, emu etc etc.
