Switching to an Amiga as a Daily Driver
« on: January 02, 2026, 01:29:08 AM »
Hi everyone,

One day I hope to retire. When that happens, I'll no longer need space hogs like VMWare and Visual Studio, so I'd like to downsize my daily-driver from a fancy laptop to a fancy Amiga. Is that possible? I expect PiStorms to be much faster by then, too. And I'd rather stick with my A600, if possible.

I'll need:
  • 1 TB of data
  • Word Processing & Spreadsheets using OpenDocument format
  • Desk Top publishing for invitations and greeting cards
  • Browsing of modern websites.
  • MP3/FLAC
  • Streaming would be extra nice too.
  • Ability to complete PDF Forms
  • IMAP/SMTP client
  • Image editing, as close to GIMP, maybe ImageFX?
Is this possible now, or likely possible in the future?

Hello,
You could consider an AmigaOS 4 machine, with a real PowerPC hardware or emulated one. Ability to complete PDF forms and a modern web browser is missing, but otherwise it should fill your needs.

Happy New Year

The A600GS and the A1200NG both run AmiBench.  This has a modern web browser that can view YouTube.  It can play videos and MP3 files.  AmiPDF has just been released which is a modern PDF viewer.  We are developing even more applications this year to move it towards being a daily driver.
