4-port USB 2.0 hub not working as expected
« on: July 29, 2024, 05:47:52 PM »
This is just more of an FYI than anything, but just thought I'd share my experience in case it's helpful to anyone else.

I thought I'd use a 4-port USB 2.0 hub to save wear and tear on the device ports.  Here is what happened:

1. Plugged in the USB hub with the A600GS (GS hereafter) off.  Connected the same keyboard and mouse that I've been using on the GS from day 1 without issue.
2. Turned the GS on; the progress bar went up as usual but when it finished it displayed Amiga-Kit and then restarted itself, back to the progress bar.  It's never done that before.
3. After the progress bar completed a second time, it got to the "Press any key / button" prompt, but the keyboard and mouse both did not work.
4. As I was considering what to do, the GS restarted itself again!  So that made my mind up - I unplugged the USB hub.
5. It then booted as normal and I plugged the keyboard / mouse in as usual and all was fine.
6. I booted my PC to double check the USB hub worked fine - it did.

So long story short - it seems that the GS (or at least, my one) has an issue with at least some USB hubs.

I have an USB 3.0 hub that I want to try, but I wanted to get some feedback from the team first as to if this is a known issue, or if anyone else can try an USB hub on their GS (at their own risk!).

Sounds like PSU to me.
What PSU you using?

I have used hubs and they work fine when using my PSU (I have insane PSU's, i.e. 100 watt).

I am using a USB wall charger; 60W, 5V, 2.4A.  Don't have anything else I can try at the moment.  I tried removing the Zipstick 9-pin joystick I had plugged into game port 1, in case that was somehow contributing, but to no avail.

The USB 2.0 4-port hub doesn't work with either a mouse OR a keyboard plugged in.  Surely either one can't require that much power?

I did try the (tested and working) USB 3.0 4-port hub but as I plugged it into an USB port (with nothing else in the other 2 ports) the A600GS immediately reset / rebooted!  The hub didn't even have anything connected to it; I'd be surprised if an empty hub drew anything but minimal power.  Very odd.

Curious, I've been using USB hubs since day one as I have to have too many things plugged in to develope this.

My hub is plugged into the central USB port next to the power USBC, I don't think that should make a difference, but worth trying.

Wow, I didn't expect that to make any difference either, but it 100% does (at least, for my A600GS).  Both the USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 hubs work perfectly in the central USB port!  But both do not work in either of the other two (and in fact, cause resets / restarts as detailed in my previous post).

I'm happy enough to have the hub(s) working from that central port but am curious to know why they only work from that one.

Thanks for the suggestion broadblues. :)
