NO, its NOT the best platform for running OS4, in fact the X1000 outperforms the X5000 in several areas.
Its the best you're allowed to buy.

True. It's a real shame that supply of the PA6T CPU at an acceptable price was killed when Apple bought up PA-Semi. At least Freescale (now NXP) committed to longer-term supply of the P50x0 and P10xx. They're not desktop class CPUs (which are hard to find in the PowerPC world), but they're available at an okay price.

Quote
Progress....right? And it only to 12 years, but were getting better, after all Tabor will move us from 64 bit cpus with a standard fpu (albeit without AltiVec) to a 32 bit cpu with a non-standard fpu that operates at less than half the speed of the G5, and only slightly more than half the speed of the X5000.

People have been asking for a low-cost low-end board; this is it.

Quote
And people think this will be adequate. Personally, a new release with performance that might not even match an Eyetech AmigaOnes is not progress to me.

You don't honestly think that it'll be slower in general use than an A1-XE do you? Sure, the A1-XE G4 had altivec, but it's data buses (memory, AGP, PCI) were all very slow compared to Tabor.

@Hans
Knowing the Tabor bus bandwidth what is the best gfx board suited to it. By best I mean fastest even if for now the DMA transfer is not utilized.

I love my X5000.  Is it my fastest computer?  No... But it is custom hardware and it works well.  Sadly, I have not had time to use mine much lately, but I plan to fire it back up tomorrow!

The higher the clock speed the faster you software will run.  This may change over time as Warp3D Nova grows and newer software starts to take advantage of the greater number of texture and shader units available on these cards.  Older software will still be dependent on higher core clocks.

At the moment the R9 270X cards are the fastest since they have higher core clocks than the otherwise more powerful R9 280/X cards.

For the Tabor I'd recommend getting the fastest compatible R7 250 card you can get since some of them have higher clock speeds than the R9 280 cards.  They also use a lot less power, are smaller and generate less heat and noise making them better suited to smaller ITX style cases that most Tabor boards will find themselves housed in.

Interesting point of view, but I'm beginning to have doubts about our current direction.
The X5000 has worse video card performance than the X1000, and it has less PCI-E lanes than the X1000.
And the X1000 itself only has about half the PCI-E lanes of a PCI-E PowerMac G5 from late 2005 (18 vs 32).
Tabor has Gen1.1 PCI-E lanes like the SAM460, and like the SAM only four are connected to the video card.
And Tabor's e500v2 cored P1022 cpu is 32 bit, unlike the X1000, the X5000, and the G5 which are all 64 bit CPUs.
Then there are the fpu issues, the G5 and the PA6T in the X1000 both had very competent standard fpus with AltiVec instructions, the P50XX CPUs in the X5000 have an adequate fpu but they are missing  the AltiVec instructions, and the P1022 in Tabor has a stripped down fpu with non-standard instructions and again no AltiVec.

So since 2005, we've moved from a quad core 2.5 GHz 64 bit system with AltiVec in a standard FPU  on a board that supported 32 PCI-E lanes to a 1.2 GHz dual core 32 bit system with a non-standard fpu on a board with what about 5 PCI-E lanes (might be a few more, I haven't checked).
And this is the 'progress' that's going to carry us into the future.
Somewhere Jay Miner is laughing his ass off.:hammer:

In this benchmark, the X1000 ivs X5000:

https://keasigmadelta.com/blog/warp3d-novas-performance-boost-partially-hidden-by-lazy-cow/

And it is a good read, the Sam460 - with the amount of pci lanes of the Tabor, is not that far behind btw.

Yeah, I'd like to see something from the later GCN generations supported.
Something like an R7 260X or even an RX 560.
I don't see the point of the higher power draw gpus like the R9 280 myself.

The more I use my X5000 the more I like it. OS4 and even 3.9 now runs faster than my 75mhz/410mhz CSPPC 4000T does. I haven't had anything fail on it that I regularly use and it a looks great. I can't for the life of me figure out why in the hell there's so much animosity towards it. Sure it's expensive, but it's a small run specialized system, not a high volume ineso it's to be expected.

The one thing I have taken away from owning an NG Amiga is toy can spend more on classic to get it setup to do what one of these can do out of the box, but still have a core of 30 year I'd hardware that will fail. Do yourself a favor and get an NG Machi eand keep a basic classic system for the games and that classic feel.

Very cool.
At least it won't weigh a ton like the G5s do.
I have only received one one those that didn't wind up with shipping damage to those big looped aluminum handles.

AND you lower your carbon footprint (save a squirrel...or a monkey or something).

CO2 is primary food for plants :), so... let the grow so I can eat them and I forgot to add we are all carbon based. ALL. :).

I'm waiting for A1222. I hope it will be nice and AVAILABLE for purchase for longer time.
