4xEIDE'99 ?
« on: September 03, 2015, 02:02:06 PM »
Hi is there an alternative to this 4xEIDE'99
Buffered IDE
still like Amigakit used to sell a few years ago which was smaller  and compact and did not stand precariously up right just waiting for me to damage the pins that holds it .Brian.

Ya know, I've glanced at that product many times and never noticed that it stands on end like that. Does that even fit under the keyboard? Anyhoo, if it were me, I would simply lay it down using a cable like this....

Other than the mounting predicament, it appears to be a great product. Maybe give that cable a try - use different length for best suitability. :)

Yes it fits perfectly, i have two of them :) It was a good thing to have back in the days when it was desirable to have many devices attached.

Hi sorry its very vulnerable as I found out when I have opened her up a few times the unit has gone over on one side only a small amount but it must have taken the pins with it and its got to the point now where it is not recognising it so it looks like a replacement EIDE 99 or I may have damaged the A600 but a cable would have probably helped so thanks my friend.

Well, all may not be hopeless... it might just be a cracked solder point on the IDE connector of the MB. again, if it were me, I would remove the MB and hit each IDE connector solder point with a soldering iron. Be sure to use flux, a clean soldering tip, and just enough heat and solder to melt each point and let them cool again.

Inspect the IDE interface connection and repeat on it too, if necessary - but I doubt there would be anything wrong on the interface unless you might have really whacked it.

Temporarily give it another try and see if this corrects the problem - if so, use a cable on the second go.

I know, MB removal.... what a pain in the A$$.... :hammer:

I find when I was using one it would slowly fall over and loose the connection. Two little blobs of hot glue and it was fine.

Are these buffered interfaces worth getting with regards to a cheap and dirty ide speed up on the 1200? In real life use is it any faster than unbuffered on an 030?

Hi well this brings me to another question do I really need one as I am only using a CD drive and a CF card so could I not just connect the two to the correct cable and make sure one is master and one is slave and if so where would I get the software from to run it all lol , Brian

Mine was too tall and it didn't stick in place (bigger problem) ,
otherwise changing regular ATA100 to ATA133 cable by Asus
made a lot of difference once I got if fixed in place.

Software you need is IDEFix 97 and it will work with pretty much
anything IDE , I have 8 Gb Apple 3.5" Hard Drive and DVD Burner
and both work.Downside : Both are sticking out of Amiga but speed
is fast enough for me.

Oh yes , just regular 2.5" to 3.5" adapter with no markings to say which
side is which so you need to look for 5 V pins

No real difference in speed with this one, same speed as connecting straight to the onboard IDE.

It is really just for being able to have a DVD and HDD at the same time and the support for large HDDs. But there are otherwise to get 120GB+ working.

For a speed up you need a FastATA or the IDE fix express. FastATA being kick ass in transfer speed.

Not entirely true, since buffered IDE adapters allows for a higher MaxTransfer value to be used on the partitions (0x1FFFE instead of 0x1FE00). This should give a slight increase in speed.

As long as both devices can be set to either master or slave (has jumpers for this), you should have no problems. If any of them lack master/slave jumpers, it may not work since it then most likely is cable-select only.

Thanks to all for there help but I have to hold my hand up and say I wish I had tried the easy route to sorting out my problems with my 4xEIDE'99
because after all the trouble of checking and rechecking every thing I had a thought about the install floppy and tried my copy and low and behold I am now up and running and thrown the original install away and I am well pleased so thanks again and thanks for some very useful facts best wishes Brian.:):):):):):):)
