Recapping services
« on: May 21, 2015, 03:07:09 AM »
It appears that recapping our Amigas will be a bigger service as they age...

How much should a recapping cost?
How long should it take?

What happens if it kills the board?

as far as I know, there's AmigaKit and New Zealand to do these services,
That adds shipping costs too, so How much?

did I miss anything?

M

Sadly, Charles at MacCaps can only replace the caps, he has no way of knowing if the board works, so anything like testing or repairs is beyond him.

Thanks for the info, but... this worries me.

"I can't test Amiga stuff right now, I simply cannot afford
Them Right now, I don't have any Amiga machines here. "

FROM the maccaps ad on ebay.

BTW, you didn't answer the other questions.

Makes sense to me.  He's saying he doesn't have room/money for Amiga setups, be-that cases, power supplies, keyboards, blah blah.  Replacing the caps isn't rocket science, he doesn't need any actual "Amiga knowledge" to do that, that's Electronics 101.  ;)  Maybe somebody should donate a full Amiga system to him, so he could put the motherboard in to test it after he's done?  But then which do you send him?  A600?  A4000?  A1200?  Obviously all this stuff takes up a lot of space, and a lot of money.

As for the other questions "What happens if it kills the board?" - shouldn't that be an obvious answer?

If anyone wants recaps done down under, I can help. I have the equipment and have done several myself, its quite easy once you have the right tools - Which are not cheap.

Where are you based? Do you do other fixes like PCMCIA broken pins etc?

Odd you should say this, I gave him a formatted HDD with OS3.1, a new square (Mech's) A500/1200 power plug, and a few other bits in March 2014.  I knew he had the schematics and equipment for Mac repairs and was willing to broaden his customer base.

Nsw central coast (Jilliby, near Wyong).. Only want to do recaps.. To busy with work to do anything else. Don't have scopes to trouble shoot other issues. So working boards only.

Maccaps does have reviews from Amiga owners that sent their MB's in for service and they were pleased at the working finished product!

Check the website.

I have had 2 A4K motherboards recapped by Charles and he did a great job, however I am awaiting the return of Anthony H. to NZ to have recaps AND repairs done to several more and a couple of A3640's.

If you have unused Amiga "bits & bobs" to send in to Charles at MacCaps that he could use to build an Amiga setup for testing motherboards, it would benefit those of living in the States.

You could try to contact RetroGameModz (Youtube channel) (I think he is from Sweden... or at least living in Sweden.) Seems like he is serious and careful in his work.
Look at his PCB solderpad repair or the CD32 RGB mod
