Amiga 500, printer suggestions needed
« on: April 25, 2015, 10:41:22 PM »
I would like to add a printer to my Amiga 500. I've been looking on ebay. Would like to find one that uses modern paper (without the holes) and can still get ink at a fair price. Any suggestions and/or other things that I might want to consider.

Are you running 1.3 or something newer? A vintage LaserJet is always a good option, but they're big and bulky. I've been using a LaserJet 4+ for years and it works great with the Amiga. There's a native OS3.x driver for it, but I think the old 1.3 generic LaserJet driver is compatible. Toner is out of production, but there's still plenty of old stock kicking around - cheap, too.

Yes, I've upgraded it from 1.3 to 3.1. I've looked at the LaserJet 4 and agree that it's a little too big. I have plans to set my Amiga 500 and 1080 monitor on one of those old timey looking small computer desks on wheels with the pull out keyboard shelf.

A DeskJet of similar vintage might work.

FYI, be careful with those keyboard drawers - some of them are secured only on one side and the whole drawer can come tumbling down if they get jostled the wrong way or if some screws become slightly loose (as often happens with actively used office furniture). Would be very bad if your 500 was in it!

Have an old HP895C that has served well for years with A2000, even better with I/O card.

If the LJ4 is out, I guess that disqualifies this, as well?  ;)

Those are good choices as HP drivers have remained pretty constant (especially for the InkJet) over the years, but stay away from any serial port printers.

Using a LPT2USB device (http://www.lpt2usb.net/) allows access to newer USB connected printers; it does this externally and transparent to the Amiga. And of course with the Plipbox parallel Ethernet device you can get an A500 both online and have access to network printers.

I dunno, is it networked or USB?

Way cool, I just bought one after reading this. I have a few HP laser printers and I would think they should work.

@ apsturk

I've been eyeing the modern LaserJet M401dne as a possible replacement for my LJ4. It supports PCL5, PCL6, and PostScript so I would think it would be Amiga-compatible from a driver perspective (bizarrely, though, it is more power hungry than the old LJ4). Let us know how things go with your LaserJets!

@ danbeaver

Nice find on that adapter. Thanks!

I used one for a couple of years until I set up a real network and connected that way; now just an Ethernet cord coming off the back.:)

I have an HP OfficeJet 8500A Pro that works with the Netprinter driver I found on aminet.  Worked great the few times I'd used it.

It has both Wireless and Ethernet.  Unfortunately of course this would require you to have a network capable Amiga.

Those would be some really big ink cartridges or maybe they have a "tank" you refill.

Danbeaver has already said this and I second it.  They are a bit dated, but the older HP DeskJet always worked just fine for me, just make sure you have the drivers, either from 3.1, 3.5, 3.9 disk or from aminet
