Using PAL Amiga 1200 motherboard in US machine
« on: August 10, 2014, 06:06:58 PM »
I am wondering.... my NTSC Amiga 1200 motherboard became ill and I sent it in for recapping but I understand it is showing some fault that has proven difficult to determine. It may become a lost cause, but I have a line on one or two PAL motherboards that are in working condition. I could have one recapped or just leave that alone until a problem develops.

Question.... Is there a downside to using a PAL motherboard in a former NTSC system in the United States? I have the original version of the Indivision and output from that (VGA connector) to a modern LCD monitor. I no longer have a need for the NTSC composite out that I used to use on this machine for video titling back in the 1990s.

Would I need a different power supply? Anything else to consider?

Maybe my 1200 motherboard will yet live again, but I'm not sure it's looking good for that.

There should be no issues in regular use - your US power supply will work fine. If you ever need to use composite again, there might be a compatibility problem, but the Indivision will take care of your regular day-to-day display needs.

I've been using a PAL 1200 here in Canada with no issues at all with both my 1080 and with LCD and IndiAGA MkIi

I don't know about that; whenever l change the jumper from NTSC to PAL on my A4000D the lights flicker across town.

Of course it works ok you have an indi mk2!

You will run into problems if you try to run any kind of genlock, digitizer or anything video related. Also the comp out will probably not display on a lot of devices.

The plus side is most games and demos were meant for PAL.

before I had my IndiAGA I was using my 1080 with no issues. Never tried  video or genlock so I'll take your word for it.

Thanks, guys, for the information. I actually did use this particular 1200 back in the 1990s for some video work, either using the onboard composite or with a Supergen genlock. But these days the output will be entirely via Indivision. Thanks again!
