Creating Mp3

I would like to create some mp3 files.  I do not know anything about creating mp3, therefore something that is simple to use would be nice.  What would be recommended or should I just forget trying to do it?

Aminet, Lame MP3 encoder. Read the docs. It's pretty simple, if the default settings are all right, but you can play with it of course.

What machine are you using ?

If its x86 then use DbPowerAmp...

Its got a good batch convert proggie.

On 68K AmigaOS I use LAME ver 3.92.
Don't think it's the latest version, but I think the later one was
unstable somehow???

I have the 060 specific version if which i can send if you like.

Usage is simple:
LAME InputFilename.aiff OutputFilename.mp3

That encodes joint stereo at 128k/sec, 44.1kHz, which is standard.
I think it can accept a variety of input file formats, but I use AIFF.
Read the docs for more info on different formats, bitrates, etc.

It's not a fast process, on an 060@50MHz, it takes approx 1 hour to
encode a typical song.  You can run many copies of LAME at the same
time, so just set up lots of seperate encodes and leave it running
overnight.

Bloody hell ... 1 hour for ONE song    :-o  I love Amiga as much as the next guy but the ANCIENT bx system I'm running here typically encodes 1 song in about 75 seconds !!   :-o

I think we need the A1-G4 xe.

I am not sure, but I am now coding a song that is about 3 mintues. It has been about 7 mintues and Lame is saying it is 25% done??

Next ?  Without me looking over the docs, can I code more than one song in the same shell?

1 Hour LOL takes here about 12 secs to encode a 4 min song to mp3/ogg/wma directly from cd.

Humm then you could do about 300 in an hour!!

Oh, where is my XEG4?? I am not sure how much faster it will be, but it will be better than one song per hour I hope.

an hour is unacceptable....I'd ditch encoding on that box...

For that XE machine i would say a mp3 per min or something like that maybe even less,

I use DbPowerAmp but only for ripping audio out of films, for mp3s DbPowerAmp is a slow beast (45 sec to encode just 1 mp3).

You can run more than one of anything in a shell by sticking "run"
in front of it.

EG:
run lame insong.aiff outsong.mp3

That will spawn a new process for each task.


And yes, I'm sure we're all aware that an hour to encode an MP3 is
slow.  When my PPC card was working it was more like 3-4 minutes/song.
But unfortunately it's no longer working, so I have to use 060 power
instead.

Yes, if I were doing it commercially I'd use something else.  But
since I'm not, and I have HOURS of waiting time at night (I sleep) so
for all I care the computer can take as long as it wants.

I use Musicmatch on my windblows box. Its pretty easy to use, has CDDB support etc and the settings are alright. Only real problem with it is that it always want's to wait for something when I load it.. damn sluggish. But encoding is pretty good. get 8-12x cd speed for rips on my Athlon 1.33Ghz (so 5 minute song will take about 30-40 seconds or so, whole albums under 10 minutes, tops). That's with the el cheapo free version of musicmatch 7.1 (and 128k bitrate etc).
