Amiga 1200 in Tower, need help with disk drive.
« on: February 10, 2004, 07:11:08 AM »
Hi,

I am building an Amiga 1200 Tower and would like to install an Epson SMD-300 disk drive as DF0.  This Epson model has the jumpers and has been used in external Amiga drives.  So, I know it should work with my Amiga 1200 system.  My question is: how do you set the jumpers on the rear of this drive?  I already have it set up as DF0, but I do not know how to set the RY (ready) and DC (disk change) jumpers.  If any of you have this Epson SMD-300 disk drive in your external Amiga drive case, please check out the jumper settings and let me know what they are.  Thanks.

Hi,
I dont know if i can help you, but here is how the SMD-300 is jumpered when its used as an internal drive in Amiga 500:
There are 2 jumpers: nr 2-3 and 12-13
(With pin 1 on the lower left and pin 14 on the top right)
I am not sure however, if this drive is compatible with Amiga 1200?
And i think also there are difference between the Amigatech and the Commorore mainboards.
It sure is not easy with all the different drives in Amiga:-)
Maybe someone else knows more?

No converter is needed or used.  The drive should work as an Amiga 880K disk drive just the way it is, but it has to be jumpered properly.

Hi PG,

You described a drive with 14 pins, are you sure your drive does not have 16 pins for the jumpers?  I have figured out that the 6 pins to the right are for setting the drive as DF0 to DF3.  Now all I need is just 2 more jumper settings and I will be in business.  I need the RY and DC jumper settings (Ready and Disk Change).  Please HELP !!!!

The Teac FD-235HF (3217-U) High Density disk drive works really well as an 880K Amiga disk drive.  I am using this drive on my Amiga 2500 computer.  If any of you guys need the jumper settings for this drive, just let me know.  You can find the Teac FD-235HF (3217-U) drives in older 486 and Pentium PCs.

Hi LinchpiN,

The web link you gave me only shows me how to set the jumpers for DF0 to DF3.  The other 2 jumpers on the bottom are for setting up the drive for a PC.  In order to make a PC High Density disk drive work as an 880K Amiga disk drive, you must be able to set 3 jumpers.  One jumper is for DF0 or DF1.  The Disk Change output must be set for pin 2 and the Ready output must be set for pin 34 (hence the need for the other 2 jumper settings).  The default settings for a PC disk drive are: DS1, Disk Change output on pin 34, and the Ready output on pin 1.  These default settings will not work with Amiga computers, so they must be changed to: DS0, Disk Change output on pin 2, and the Ready output on pin 34.  Any PC disk drive that can be set up like this will work with the Amiga computer.  Since "Amiga Disk Drives" are now hard to find, it would be a good idea to find out the jumper information on all of the PC High Density disk drives that will work with the Amiga.

Agreed, it would be handy.... Maybe you can take a small photo or make some sorta paint picture of the settings and post them here or some other amiga site to assist future users...

I will be using Deluxe Paint IV AGA to draw the jumper settings for various PC High Density disk drives that work on the Amiga as I get them.  They will be posted here in the images area, if the Web Master and Moderators will allow me to.

Hi again,
Sorry for my late reply.
No, my drive looks exaktly like the one in the link provided by LinchpiN.
Maybe there are different versions of the SMD-300?

I found out that this disk drive is actually an Epson SMD-340 (there was a printed label stuck on the inside of cover).  So, it may only work with an Atari ST computer system.  Lucky for me, I plan to put together an Atari MegaST4 Tower of Power and this drive will work great in the grey and blue PC Tower Case (the front of this drive is grey).  In fact, I just placed an ad here on Amiga Org to trade a boxed Amiga 1200HD for a Atari MegaST4 system.  Do you think someone here will trade me?
