WTB: PC 3D video card in ISA slot, possible???
« on: April 11, 2013, 11:06:39 PM »
Anyone know if there is a 3D video card in ISA slot format?
Just purchased another SBC Pentium 266Mhz card for use in my A2000. My previous SBC in A2000 was a 486 50Mhz, but I felt that it was too slow, even running Doom was a little faster then on my A4000.
I'm waiting for ISA edge connector so I can convert 2 PC 8bit ISA slots in A2000 to the 16bits, giving me total of 4.

A600 KS 3.1, 2MB Chip, ACA630 32MB RAM

A1200 KS 3.1, Blizzard IV 50MHz 64MB RAM
A2000 KS 2.1, 68030 25MHz, 6MB RAM
A3000 KS 3.1, 68030 25MHz, 16MB RAM
A4000 KS 3.0, 68040 25MHz, 16MB RAM
CDTV KS 3.1, 4MB RAM

Not too sure, plenty of old cards on ebay.

As for working with an Amiga, wouldn't know :-(

There was never a 3D card released in ISA format.  The first 3D card I remember was the S3 Virge but that was PCI, even back in '95.  There may have been one or two VLB versions of PCI cards made but never ISA.

I'm looking for a 3D video card for use with my Single Board Computer.
I'm also planning to buy PCMCIA PC/104 card, so I can use a CDROM or CF card and a 3D card if possible.

I would agree, there were 2 MB VGA cards out there in 16-bit ISA, but 3D cards went PCI then VLB (few), then AGP.

I remember back in the day there was software options but they were very slow. I ended up getting an ISA to PCI bridge card.

Well, it was worth a shot. I have a Descent 3 CD game for PC, and one of the requirements was a 3D acceleration.

I think your best shot is not using your Amiga as a passive backplane and get one with PCI slots for a PCI enabled SBC; or live with 2D games.

Or, I could use my Quad Core 2Ghz PC...
But, I want to do things the hard way, hence the ideas.

Exactly what my partner said, she goes to me why are you spending time with the 1200/500 when you could use your i7 laptop ;-)

Creative made a VLB "3d blaster" that was pretty poorly received.

If you can scare one up, a Number Nine GXE might suit.
Back away from the EU-SSR!

I'm not sure there's a lot of point in putting a 3d card on a 16-bit 8MHz bus.....

It's going to be faster than putting a 2d card on a 16 bit 8mhz bus.

If the card has enough vram for the textures then you'll only be sending it a drawlist.

Don't forget how primitive the early 3D cards were though - none of this hardware T+L and stuff. Plus they didn't have much memory so you'd still need to texture upload a lot (2MB for the S3 ViRGE, and that included the frame buffer!).
