Installing and configuring a 3Com 3C589C Ethernet Card

Hey there,

I have finally found the time to install a new hard drive into my Amiga 1200 and install it with OS3.9.

After some minor issues with the partitioning scheme and the resource.library not being installed at all (just copying it from the installation CD fixed it), I am now ready to hook up my Amiga to the internet.

For this, I want to use an old 3Com 3C589C PCMCIA network card which plugs into my A1200. Furthermore, I have installed all internet utilities (Genesis, AmTCP, AmiWeb and AmigaMail) from the OS3.9 installation CD.

So far so good. What's the next step to get the network card running? I assume I'll just install the driver, tell the Genesis Wizard to use it and I am done? Does AmTCP/Genesis support DHCP?

The Amiga is to be connected to a university network through Ethernet with a full DHCP and name server running.

Any tips are appreciated .

AmiTCP doesn't have DHCP support, so you'd need to have static IP addresses. If it isn't possible, then you could get some few bucks router in between to do the job. Or change tcp/ip stack to Miami or wait till next year for Roadshow.

Your PCMCIA card migth also not work directly because of the PCMCIA reset bug on A1200. Card shoud start working if you hotswap it when computer is on and for longer term fix you should install cardreset/cardpatch fixes from Aminet.

Otherwise setting up the TCP/IP stack should be pretty straightforwarded as you already guessed. Install the driver and configure the stack.

Static IP is fine, so it should work.

Ah, I remember to have read about this somewhere. But so far, I haven't had any PCMCIA-related problems on my A1200 so far. All cards were immediately detected.

I made a video showing how to get the wireless working on A600/A1200 using the AmiTCP, it should work on PCMCIA Ethernet cards also, but w/o the wireless setup config.

No, AmiTCP/IP Genesis is a good choice. It has the speed of AmiTCPs, but also user friendly GUI which older AmiTCPs are missing. If you don't need DHCP, PPPoE, NAT etc more complicated stuff, then it's the best choice IMO.
