SKIPROMUPDATES=exec.library .........
« on: January 25, 2004, 12:23:30 AM »
This, will avoid the newer exec written in C and so AmigaOS will use the previous version wrrtten in assembler wich was faster.

Now,  two questions pop up in my mind regarding the one written in C:
 What featrures/benefits does it add?
Why written in C wich is slower?!

And by the way, have there been any reported problems using the previous assembler version with AOS3.9 ?

I'd guess it was written in C for the sake of making it more maintainable.

Assembler sucks badly for good code maintainance. Bug detection and stomping is much easier in C.

-edit-

Anyway, the time critical parts probably are still assembler, since stuff like the task switching mechanism needs to do low level stuff that C itself doesn't really cater for.

As for speed differences, I bet you'd be hard pressed to notice anyway.

Well, from an older posting on WHDLoad:

Well I figured out the problem: AmigaOS ROM Update V44.57 (BB2). I guess WHDLoad does not like this ROM update on a 4000, as on my 3000 it works fine. I reverted to BB1 ROM Update and the games seem to be working ok now. I emailed Bert.

You may also try on SS:
C:SetPatch SKIPROMUPDATES exec.library QUIET

Just saves you from installing/uninstalling BBs etc.. ;-)

I think is written in C for porting/updating on other CPU architectures in mind.

Karlos was faster than me!!! :-)
Anyway, a strange thing happened: while I was writing my post the cookie must have been deleted, because I couldn't post (not accepted), plus I had to log in again :-? .

If you have the hardware necessary to run Blizkick...give that a go with the exec.44 beta.

The Blizkick guide goes into great details how to apply patches etc. and the exec.44 beta gives details too.

I have to admit that on my Blizzard 1230mvIV A1200...running a patched Blizkick rom with the exec.44 beta does "feel" faster than the exec.v45.7 from Boing-Bag 2 ...and on an AGA only graphics system, the options that i have used, means i get over 1.8MB of ChipRAM free after booting, and running a 128 colour workbench feels quite snappy too...

Stability is not a problem either...I haven't experienced a crash in over a week of testing...

Its worth an hour of your time setting the program up, if you have the hardware to take advantage of it...

@Rob72
Is that the latest exec written in asm?
Haven't used it so can't comment, but I really don't like the workd BETA in a kernel  8-)

AFAIK, it is written wholly in Assembler, by the same author that wrote BlizKick.

Although it is beta...i have not had any problems with it. I have used a variety of WHDLoad games, the 3 Amiga web-browsers, Miami, various Vapor products, ImageFX and ADPro, Directory Opus Magellan 5.82...and with no problems.

This is running on a straight A1200, AGA, Blizzard 1230Mk.IV with 32MB RAM, and a 4xEIDE'99 IDE adapter. No other hardware hacks. The only software "hacks" are FBlit, WBCtrl and SysPatch 2.2...these would be redundant if you were running an RTG display...

It works for me...but as i said...it is easy to revert back to your previous system, and un-install Blizkick/execv44...it may be worth a try...

In my experience, the original exec patched with exec44
works the best, and is great with OS3.9. I did encounter a few
programs that were troublesome with the BB2 exec, and also
IBrowse seemed to have some minor issues (believe it or
not, there was actually a site that would crash IBrowse *only*
when using the BB2 exec).

From my recollection there is NO advantage to using the newer exec
over the original patched with exec44.
