Lyra 2 : incompatibilities with some WHDLoad games ?
« on: April 11, 2012, 10:22:51 AM »
Hi everyone !

I just figured out a couple of games (including the Obsession Pinball) behaved in a very strange way with the Lyra 2 PS/2 keyboard adapter, while everything else seems to work like a charm. (I use it for an arcade cabinet : pictures incoming :-)

For instance, keys do not react or take a time to react or stick. If I use the Amiga kb, everthing is all right. The fact that I just hit one key from the PS/2 keyboard puts Obession in a strange state where even the Amiga kb stops working properly. Sometimes, it comes back to normal after a few other keypresses but it even crashed once.

What is really strange is that, in most games, everything works as expected : keys do not stick and are super responsive. Fortunately, Slam Tilt and Pinball Dreams/Fantasies/Illusions work perfectly ;-)

--> my question is : is it a known fact that some whdload games do not work with the Lyra 2 (1200) and what may be the reason ?

Cheers & thanks for reading this :)

Could you also test if Arkanoid gives you any problems (starting game/pausing)? I'm having probs with it but it might not be related to Lyra/WHDLoad.
Give a shout if/when you have tested it.Thanks.

I have trouble with A1200 Lyra 2 also, but I always thought it's because I'm using it on an A500. After reading about your problems I'm not so sure anymore. When I return back to Workbench after playing some WHDLoad game, a single key press then produces multiple characters eg. if I press the c key I get about 4 of them. I need to soft reset the Amiga to get it working again. So maybe there are incompatibilities.

I have also Lyra 2 and sometimes when exiting a WHDLoad game the keyboard does strange things like you had pressed some button down and it repeats that letter until I press any key on kb. Then it stops.

@mahen
Had time to test Arkanoid yet?

Hi ! Well, no problem with Arkanoid nor Revenge of Doh. What shouldn't work ?

Can you try Obsession with your Lyra 2 please ?

I mailed Jens about it. He is not aware of the problem but has an idea what might be wrong. We should try to gather as much data as possible to help him fix it when he's time.

I'll try to find more titles which have issues and check when there are really Lyra 2 specific. (easy as I have both the built in keyboard and the PS/2 connected at the same time)

Meanwhile, can you guys give Obsession a shot ?

Cheers !

If most games work properly with the Lyra, I figured out 3 pinball games do not

- Obsession
- Pinball Prelude
- Pinball Mania

The following ones are OK :

- Dreams - Fantasies - Illusions and thanks god - Slam Tilt

Can you Lyra 2 users confirm those results ?

In Arkanoid when I try to start a game with F1/1 the game just reboots and thus doesn't work. I tested also with a floppy version made from an adf-file. Same thing. Revenge of Doh works flawlessly.

Sure I try Obsession and those other Pinball games and report back.

Yes, and I can confirm everything you said in your first post. I had to press the keys several times even to get a word typed in the copy protection screen. And after selecting table to play, the keyboard usually went totally unresponsive. Only soft reset was possible.

With Amiga keyboard Obsession worked without problems.

Played a few rounds of Arkanoid with no problems. Also Arkanoid: Revenge of Doh works ok.

@Bamiga : Yep, no problem either with Arkanoid. (oops, I mentioned it earlier but after re-reading myself it wasn't clear).

@ Antti : thanks a lot for this test ! If other Lyra others could check too, to see if it happens in 100% of cases.

When you have time, can you give Pinball Prelude a try as well ? :-)

Well, I hope a solution can be found in the future, it's strange nobody reported those issues before.

I just got the Lyra 2 and for an external option on a desktop A1200. I have not played that many whdload games yet...

Anyway, i guess it depends on if the Lyra 2 is software flashable which i don't know.

I can confirm that 2 of those games are NOT working with Lyra/Lyra2.
Obsession: no response at all
Pinball Mania: VERY slow response or none at all
Pinball Prelude:

I have the old Lyra (1 ?) and recognized some days a little delay pressing the keys when I played Slamtilt. Thought it could be the problem playing it on an DLP projector but having a Cinemateq scaler between the A1200 and the projector.

I think I have to try it once without the scaler and once also on the old Philips CM 8833 to be sure Lyra is the reason for this problem.
