Companies That Still Make 16-bit Games?
« on: March 25, 2012, 11:41:58 AM »
Just out of curiosity, does anyone here know about anyone still making games today for the original Amiga? ie. coding in 16-bit? Just a bit curious about this (as a gamer).....

It is impossible to code Amigas in 16-bit as there is no such thing as a 16-bit Amiga.

All Amigas ever built can only be programmed in 32-bit because they have 32-bit CPUs.
Wanna try a wonderfull strategy game with lots of handdrawn anims,
Magic Spells and Monsters, Incredible playability and lastability,
English speech, etc. Total Chaos AGA

Sorry for the confusion, I guess it's my habit as a Brit...
When I said '16-bit games I actually meant Amiga games. '16-bit' is a nickname I've always used to refer to Amiga period games. :)

You see back in my days, the earliest Amigas that we had were all 16-bit. All the magazines referred to the battles between the Amiga and Atari ST called it the '16-bit battles'. You can check this yourself on Wikipedia.....the earliest Amigas DID have 16-bit, only the later ones were changed to 32-bit.

So rephrasing the question what I was meant to ask was….'Is there anyone still making games for the Amiga today?' i.e. adventures/shootemups etc? a la Commando style, Defender of the Crown, Xenon etc? I know that on Lemon Amiga there's been a few out last year (like Prince of Persia for the C64) but nothing that I'm aware of that is new for the Amiga, hence I'm asking....

That's ChaosLord's ever so subtle way of saying "yes, haven't you heard of my game Total Chaos AGA yet, look at the link in my sig"...

... er, the site is down for maintenance right now however but you can find all the info you need with a google search.

The last game I can find from the lemon amiga database is from 2005 called desert racing of bardos.

There have probably been others.

I too would refer to the Amiga as 16 bit, especially the earlier ones.

In the UK we always called the C64, amstrad etc 8 bit and the amiga/st 16 bit.

I doubt the early amiga/st computers were truly 32 bit.

On the lemon amiga forums there is a thread from a guy who has released a game called downfall recently.

No you did not.

There are no 16-bit Amigas.  There never have been and there never will be.

The earliest Amiga was the A1000.  It can only run 32-bit software.

If your statement is true then "all the magazines" lied.

hehehehe I didn't even think of that.

I was so mad about the deragatory insulting accusation of the mighty Amiga running 16-bit games... that was all I could think about. :madashell:

Thank u for getting me back on track :)

Yeah that Total Chaos fansite has been down for months

@Middleman
Tripitaka is correct, Team Chaos still works on the Total Chaos series of games.   As proof that the game really exists and is not 16-bit, you can look at this: http://us4.aminet.net/aminet/docs/rview/TotalChaosAGA-Review.jpg

The 68000 only has 16-bit bus so it was not generally considered a full 32-bit CPU back in the day.  The Atari ST's name alludes to this; it stands for Sixteen/Thirty-two (and perhaps also Sam Tramiel).  The TT had an 030 so was Thirty-two/Thirty-two.

Given Jack Tramiel's history, I think he might have skipped the SS tag ;)

The 68000 only has a 16 bit DATA bus. The address bus is 23 bits. The general purpose registers are 32 bits.

Data bus: 16 bits
Address bus: 23 bits
Address Register Size: 32 bits
Data Register size: 32 bits
Instruction size: variable (multiple of 16 bits)

As far as programming goes, it looks and acts like 32 bits. You are right that it is generally considered a 16/32 bit hybrid CPU.
