2000 Extra Chip RAM.
« on: August 12, 2011, 06:40:26 PM »
How rare is an additional 1Mb of Chip RAM for the Amiga 2000.

There are a couple of 2000's I am looking at, but as fate would have it, neither one has had it's chip RAM expanded. Considering the fact that I'm going to be using it for video production, a Chip RAM upgrade will be mandatory. So before I jump and make any purchases, can any of you enlighten me as to how rare such an upgrade is and how expensive it might be?

Thankx!

Depending on what version mobo you're looking at, the 1mb Chip RAM mod is relatively easy to perform. Cut a trace and solder a couple of pads together is pretty much it. Lots of info online if you search for it.

To bring it up to the full 2mb of Chip RAM, you'd need a DKB MegaChip or equiv. I have one for sale under the same user name, but I think AmigaKit still stocks a new one for a little less money. Nice thing about mine though is that you don't have to remove the Gary chip to sneak another socket under and Agnus is socketed. I realize mine might be priced a little "high", but figure I may as well keep it for anything less. Especially after ePay, ScamPal and the post office all get their cut.

I sold one a while back for $50 I think.

I see them on ebay regularly for $95.

Some might say that's too much, but either you need it or you don't, you know?

Well I just ordered this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180708385429&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

The seller never wrote me back about how much Chip RAM it has, but I decided at that price it was selling for, I could not go wrong, especially if upgrading is a simple as it sounds.

I do not see any memory expansions for sell on AmigaKit, so I'll prolly be in touch with you during or after work tonight.

Thankx!

That looks like a rev 4.x board, so it probably only has 512k chip ram unless someone has upgraded the Agnus and done a simple mod on it.

Great price though.

Whatever you do, you will NOT want a 4.0 rev A2000 as that one's based on the A1000 chipset and chip RAM is not expandable. These can be easily recognized for lacking the 'mono video' jack. A 4.1 should be fine.

Good to know! :)

I'm really curious to know what other upgrades this may require. It's been SOOO LONG since I've owned a 2000.

Can I use a PC keyboard on this?

Aghhh, and not at a bad price either.

I'll be back for that after I tie up this 1200 deal. Thankx!

BTW, if my board is only 512Mb CHIP. Does anyone here do the RAM doubling Hack? I'd pay!
