MorphOS on unsupported MACs?
« on: July 28, 2011, 07:42:00 PM »
Hi everyone,

I know I'll get flamed for this but I don't care. It is a legit question.

Is there a way to trick MorphOS to install on unsupported MACs?

I am not asking MorphOS team to support this. I know and I understand their policies. I am asking to see what would happen if for example we could manage to get it running on an iBook G4 for example.

Has any one tried?

The main reason only certain Macs are supported is that Apple seems to change it's base configuration such as video cards about as often as Steve Jobs changes his liver.  So the drivers just are there.  Even if you could install Morphos it probably wouldn't work.

What we\'re witnessing is the sad, lonely crowing of that last, doomed cock.

LOL Funny analogy. I thought it was his kidney? Anyway, I understand that drivers won't work but I would love to at least see what a heck happens during the boot process. Instead MorphOS stops right at the boot with a Quark message.

Hi... what happens if you install it on an supported mac, than install the HD in an unsupported mac? I mean we got leopard running on g3's.... well one hurdle would be the binding of MOS to the HW....

Ok now the serious part. An Apple notebook is a fragile HW... especially it could just run hot(Ibooks are known for there Logicboard failures). When Team MorphOS says "ok MorphOS is ready for Powerbooks or whaterverbooks" than it will be save..

I did try the trial with the 30 minutes limitation but of course it will not install on an unsupported MAC.

hmmmmm that is actually not a bad idea. However, a hell of a job lol. I have an eMac with MorphOS installed and an iBook. I would have to figure out how to clone the HDD from the eMac to a laptop hard drive and then totally disassemble the iBook. Tactical but totally unpractical.

Oh well! I really like MorphOS but I don't use desktop computers anymore unless I am at work.
I am totally mobile when at home and the road and I use the iBook as my playtime/hobby machine. Would love to have MorphOS boot on it.

Hmm i see it quite simple. But only in my mind : )
Firewire target mode. Carbon copy cloner..... and a bit voodoo

Yeah MorphOS is the reason why i hold my ibooks : ) I hope they will release MOS asap for them... i love my ibooks... and while Blender works on MOS it doesn't on  OS9.
I run OS9 on some ibooks because it is much faster than OSX. So i assume MOS will be the ideal OS.

Firewire target mode if we were talking about OS X. I think I can't use target mode while running MOS can I? The idea here is to have MOS installed on a 2.5 HDD and then implant it into the iBook G4.

Well if you install it on a partition not the whole HD you could use carbon copy cloner CCC on OSX to make a raw copy to a partition on your Ibook HD...
You could also do a image, tranfser this with a USB-stick to your ibook OS X and use CCC on the ibook to copy the Image to a free partition.

I don't know how MOS handles his protection. Would it in theory boot further, show the desktop and than say "Wooops you pirate i call the cops". ???  Or would you just get a black screen... i don't know.

I don't know about ibooks, but powerbooks g4 were solid and stable, and are a good hardware even today for certain tasks. For morphos they are plentiful, and a good match of hard/soft.

What a surprise, that's why they are called unsupported ;)

Being serious - I believe that mac hw is so different (for example ibook and powerbook) that there is no chance that they (MorphOS Team) can make it. I also prefer to support as much strong hw (powerbook) than ibook.

In the time i was replying, there was several ones that were posted and i didn't see it :P.
Mac Mini inner parts are made with laptop technology, so it couldn't be so much different than other mac laptops. Surely the gfx part is a important part for mos(only ati), but the rest of the hardware don't varies much.
One thing i saw when partitioned my system with ubuntu, preparing the mos install, was that the installer, detected the hardware as "unknown Powerbook". That caught my attention for a while.

Apart from the Mini - what is the fastest/best G4 machine that is supported by MorphOS? I was looking at G4 MDD's today at a recycler and they sure are cheaper than the last time I was there. Seems they are almost giving them away these days. Agreed they are just about useless for OSX but MorphOS FLIES on my Mini 1.5

Thanks,
Jeff
