CD filesystems

AsimCDFS, AllegroCDFS, CacheCDFS, AmiCDFS...

After my 3.0 to 3.1 upgrade issue, my CD drive is no longer recognized.  I am pretty sure it has to do with AsimCDFS, as when I re-add my "old" user startup script, it tries to load Asim but then gurus.  Unfortunately I cannot simply reinstall Asim as it came "preinstalled" on my new to me A4000.  After some shallow Googling, it also looks to be one of those commercial not in the PD but the company is clearly tits up type programs which would involve a lot of stupid "wink wink nudge nudge" on this board or others to track down the latest version of Asim.  I really just don't have the energy to play that game right now, so...alternatives. The idea would be that I could install this and if later on down the road I add a DVD/RW it wouldn't bat an eye.  I can download allegroCDFS off of vesalia, but it comes bundled with some turboata stuff I have no use for.  CacheCDFS I have no idea about, and Ami is of course free off of aminet.

If you were to be satisfied with one CD?DVD accessing solution for 3.1, which would it be?

With regards to OS3.1, when it comes to using the CD Drive you just need to drag the file out of Storage and dump it into your Devs folder along with any otehrs you fancy like MS0: or RAD:, etc.  You may need to adjust the device number, etc.
A2000, A3000, 2 x A1200T, A1200, A4000Tower & Mediator, CD32, VIC-20, C64, C128, C128D, PET 8032, Minimig & ARM, C-One, FPGA Arcade... and AmigaOne X1000.

This is something you should only do if you need the CD drive to transfer a "real" CD file system from another computer.

If it needs to be free, you should go with AmiCDFS2. All other file systems you mentioned are commercial.

CacheCDFS comes with IDEfix but needs registration, otherwise it nags with requesters.

A version of CacheCDFS without nag requesters comes with OS 3.9.

To get AllegroCDFS running, you need a piece of hardware from Elbox which acts as a dongle, for example a FastATA4000 or an EIDE'99.

Ah, cheers for that.

My usual course has been to install OS3.1, drag out the CD driver and then install OS3.9.

I assume that trick will work with 3.1 as well?

Well, I can currently boot into 3.1 in an A4000 and use the CDrom without problem :)

But Thomas is the expert in this field and with hard drives, so always listen to him :)

Personally I'd go with AllegroCDFilesystem Ver 3.5 placed in the L: drawer as it outperforms all of the others by quite a bit in some cases... :)

Only trouble is you need to purchase a FastATA MKIII or a 4xEDIE interface to get it as it has built in code that checks for the hardware being available on your miggie... :(

But having said that if you do own AllegroCDFilesystem then it can be easily hacked to remove the "checking code" which is right at the beginning of the software and allows you to use it with other makes of buffered interface boards...;)

Certainly it will.

Actually I don't know any reason why AsimCDFS could have stopped working after upgrading to 3.1. Are you sure the ROM is the only thing you changed? Are the cables still connected properly to the CD drive? Does the tray open if you push the button?

Did you upgrade the system software, too?
