Looking for amiga printer
« on: January 16, 2011, 12:18:58 AM »
Looking to see if someone has a printer they want to part with that:

A: Still works

B: Is amiga compatible without much fuss

C: Is still possible to track down ink cartridges for (or are easily refilled)

Preferably in the US, as shipping might be prohibitive otherwise

I don't have one that I can part with, but I would be on the lookout for the older HP Laserjet 5 or 6.  Both are parallel port tech, but only B&W.  I got mine for free.  When you do find them they tend to be pretty cheap.  I believe they are compatible.

Go for the laserjet 5 or 6 they work great on amiga if you only need black and white.
I send files via netprinter.device to the color zerox 6130 laser network printer here via netprinter.device. works with most post script compatible printers.

mechy, can you print things like Final Writer documents and Draw Studio vector images through the netprinter.device, or is it only limited to plain text?

Only looking for black/white text in any event, so thats fine. I'll keep an eye out for the HP's.
How hard is it to get cartridges / toner for them?

You might find a $99 or so Brother laser printer that emulates either the HP LaserJets or has PostScript with a parallel interface still. I think I have one that has ethernet, USB and parallel connectivity but I will have to check the model number.

So am I right in assuming that as long as its post script capable and obviously has parallel cable, it should work ?

OfficeMax carries the carts for around 60 - 80 bucks (depending on original or generic).  I'm using the new one I bought 2 years ago - it has seen very heavy use in the last year and no signs of it dying yet.

Only the underlying printer driver matters. All NetPrinter does is redirect output to the network instead of the local printer (i.e., parallel.device). Think of it as a more transparent and versatile implementation of CMD.

So, yes, you can print anything through it :)

I use it with a LaserJet4Plus. Works great.

Thanks Matt_H, I was hoping that would be the case, similar to the USB printer device in Anaiis I guess.
