Simple, office space (desktop space). The design of this machine takes even less than if you used a notebook and plugged a real keyboard into it (so you can atually type on one). 
I also will never understand why they stopped making slimline desktop cases (that fit under your monitor). They'd be perfect with today's integrated micro ATX motherboards and they'd take up zero desk (or floor) space because they'd fit under the monitor's footprint.
I dunno. Maybe the same size space taken if you use a TFT monitor with that computer.
Plus the laptop is fully portable.

As for desktop cases, you can buy matx cases new still. Aopen makes them. Only bugger is finding half height decent video cards.
Or if you need a full sized ATX desktop case, they're easy enough to find 2nd hand. I have my server in one.
OR, you can buy a VIA Eden and a case for it which is even smaller still.
