X-Surf gone?
« on: September 28, 2010, 06:29:23 PM »
I see that the sites which recenly sold the X-Surf Zorro network card no longer list them. Are they already sold out? Any more on the way? Getting a network card is all I need to do to get my A4000 as fully functional as my 1200... I'd like to make it my main Amiga, but I'm sticking with the 1200 until I get a network card.

I think the Deneb made the x-surf redundent since it can do usb networking and a whole lot more.

AmigaKit doesn't seem to have the Deneb anymore either, though I'd much rather have the X-Surf given the choice.

Any specific reason why it should be an X-surf? I've seen three Zorro network NICs sold on Ebay within the last week - you can probably find one, although if you do not have a Deneb USB I vote for getting that (or both!)

It says "In Stock" on the link?. Did you mail them?. Just out of curiosity, why would you prefer an X-surf over the Deneb?.

Aside from having an IDE and 2 clockports, X-Surf was selling for less than any other Zorro ethernet cards I've seen on ebay... plus newer hardware will probably last longer.

From what I remember the IDE on the X-surf was pretty limited. You couldn't boot from it. why pay top dollar for hard to find clockport devices when you can use cheap PC USB items hooked to the Deneb that do the same thing.

My friend "The Goose" on here has a Deneb & an X-surf in his A3000. He would probably sell you his X-surf if you ask......

X-Surf is now out of stock - we have no plans to commission another product run at the moment.

Clone it?

Otoh, making a new card shouldn't be that hard. It's low frequency, low density pin count etc..

and the Deneb has an A1200 clock port on it (although I don't use it myself) and I connect my A4000 to my home network via a cheap $15 USB Ethernet box using iBrowse and Miami.

Yup.

  • 100Mbit USB->Ethernet dongle (for a few euro) + Zorro-III Deneb should be faster than the 10Mbit Zorro-II X-Surf.
  • A USB2.0 external hard drive it will be faster than X-Surf IDE AND you can boot from it.
  • Deneb's clock port offers the same capability as the X-Surf.
  • Deneb's flash ROM can patch your system to KS3.9 so you don't need new KS ROMs if you're 3.0 and don't need a reboot when running OS3.9.
  • As has been said you can also use a whole host of other USB cards. AHI sound card, printer, hub, Flash etc. etc.
All for what? €30 more RRP than an XSurf?

I have a spare X-Surf around here.  You have tempted me to sell it or trade for a Deneb.  (been wanting a Deneb for a long time, anyway.)
