CrossMAC keeps resetting old device configuration
« on: August 28, 2010, 02:55:35 PM »
Hello. I have a strange issue. Im trying to set up my Mac emulation partitions (2 in total) coz Im eager to play around with Fusion. Im encountering a weird problem when trying to mount/init Amiga partitions using CrossMAC. I have 2 partitions on my drive that are far below the 4GB barrier. In HDtoolbox they are configured as normal SFS partitions at first. The first one is named MAC1 and the second, MAC2. Both partitions show up on Amiga Workbench after rebooting, as can be seen in the screenshot below.

So, I install CrossMAC and after installing, I enter setup again to 'Configure on an Amiga partition'. I then select my harddrive and the first of the two partitions. It shows up as 1GB which is correct. I have to give it a name so I type in: macos0: (the 0 being added automatically).

I hit okay and then... an icon appears on my Workbench. You would *THINK* it would be a new partition called 'macos0' and 1GB in size, right?

But its not. Its called MACHD1 and its 2.5GB in size. As a result I cannot mount the other partition, it will warn me I have another partition configured in this space, and it will cause a conflict and such. As you can see, from the Amiga side of things the original partitions are still there, in correct size.

Any idea how this can happen? I should add one thing: Yesterday I had configured just one partition in HDToolbox, 2.5GB in size, and labelled it MACHD1 from either Crossmac or Fusion, I cant remember. But where is it getting this info from and why is it conflicting? Snoopdos didnt really help much..

BTW, the reason for wanting 2 smaller partitions instead of one big 2.5GB partition is because its a bit more secure in case one of them gets corrupted, and because I was afraid partitions above 2GB were not supported in MacOS7.x. It kept saying it could not initialize the disk because its defective. Tips for that problem is also very welcome.

Was hoping for some more reponse :) Here's an update: I changed the configuration back to one partition, 2.5GB in size. I've managed to get this working reliably. However, macos7.x (devicedisk) under shapeshifter is not able to 'initialise' the disk, saying its defective. So far I've found no way around this. Does anyone know what's causing this? Its got nothing to do with running patches and the partition is within the first 4GB. I've tried setting it to Mac/00 filesystem (made available by crossmac) and some SFS settings. Blocksize is set to 1024.

Fusion doesnt work at all, it has trouble initialising the video drivers. I've tried all supplied drivers, but nothing seems to work. Are there dedicated CGX4 drivers that someone can send me, please?

I've tried Basilisk, too, but it keps showing the Question-mark thingie even when booting from a devicedisk.

Hope I did RTFM.. Please help!

"With versions of the Macintosh operating system previous to System 7.5 we recommend making the volume sizes slightly less than 2 GB to ensure that you do not run into any limitations."
I stayed in 1 GB as it was enough  for me.

I would, too, if it wasnt experiencing the problems described in my opening post :)

I never used crossmac - just booted from a filedisk and added the dedicated partition for Mac side in Shapeshifter using Shapeshifter's tools and then put the Mac OS into the partition. The same partition could then be used in Fusion, too - and Basilisk. And in iFusionPPC as additional disk. But atm I think it has bit the dust - the whole SCSI disk I mean. When working it was not readable via Amiga except using Shapeshifter's tools.

thats exactly how I was using it in the past, too.. such a shame its not working for me anymore. Ill try to do it without crossmac, might be less confusing for me and the OS.

Hmm I think I've cracked it:

- partition size should be under 2GB
- blocksize should be 512
- partitions should be formatted as ffs

they can then be 'mounted' in shapeshifter prefs, are recognised and can be initialised (formatted) under emulation. After that I can hopefully add the partition using crossmac and mount it under Amiga's filesystem using a dosdriver. Will try that tomorrow. This way I can shovel a gb of old Mac games around :)

If that all works, I can probably boot from it under Fusion, too. If only I had a working graphics driver.. Come on, surely someone has been using Fusion under CGX4? please send me your videodriver or at least its name :(
