3 new A2000s, difficult to update
« on: November 28, 2003, 03:35:29 AM »
I rescued 3 A2000s from a senseless demolition.  One has a GVP 030 accel/scsi/memory expansion. With a 3.1 rom, I could update to OS3.5 or 3.9 easily.  But I could only use FFS! ;(

The A2500 has an A2630 accel. and an A2091 SCSI interface with V6.1 roms.  It doesn't like 2.04 OS rom on the motherboard, nor a 2.1GB HDD.

The A2000HD has an A2091 with v6.6 roms.  I can run OS2.1 but, it won't boot with the 2.1GB HDD either.

I think I may have to update the A2091 roms and maybe the A2630 roms.  Anyone know?

I also have a Supra Turbo 25 (an accel. with a 68000 clocked at 25Mhz) for an A500.  Has anyone put one of these in an A2000?  Pin 1 isn't marked, I'd hate to put it in backward.

Maybe I should have stated my probs as questions.  (grin)

Must the rom of the GVP combo board be the latest revision to work with an alternate filesystem?

Are there known compatibility issues with the A2091 roms and larger HDD?  OS2.1 roms? OS3.1 roms?

Are there issues with the A2630 and the above upgrades?

Does anyone run a Supra Turbo 25 in an A2000HD?

Knowlege of any of these probs could be useful to me.  Thanks in afvance.

There are some info about how to jumper the Supra Turbo 28 for use in the A2000 on Amiga Hardware Supra Turbo 28 page. Unfortunately they dont mention which way you should insert the card. Found something worth mentioning in a review of the card - according to the manual the card doesnt work with A2000 manufactured 1986 in Germany (these should be the oldest A2000 called A2000-A) because they wont allow the Supra-card to disable the cpu on the motherboard.

Concerning the A2091 Controller Card. If I remember correctly the Ver 6.6 RoMs had problems with drives greater than 1.2 GB. The Rev. 7.0 ROMs should be OK though. Ir even better the Rev 6.6 GURU ROM for A2091 if you can still find then.

I have tested 4.2 GB HDD's with the GURU ROM and they are detected properly.

This link might help you a little bit with your Supra Turbo, I know a couple people in our club used to have this in their 2000, but I don't remember much about it (too long ago!). I am pretty sure the cpu card points towards the drive bays.

The 2.04 ROM in the one 2000, does it have PIN1 wired to PIN30? I'm pretty sure it needs to have that with your motherboard revision.

If I have military spec stuff listed on eBay, you can find it here  :-)

The A2630 ROMs need to be at least 6.6, better 7.0 to run OS 2.0+
For the A2091 ROMs they have to be 7.0 to support HDs lager then 1 GB.
For the GVP a Guru ROM is allways a good advice, if you could get one today.
Not really interesting, but it`s there.

Thanks everyone for the help and links, especially for the Turbo 28.  I pulled 1 of my A500s apart and verified the orientation with the CPU with the expansion slot.  The A2000 is the same.  I now have a usably fast machine!

Several of you mentioned a "guru rom" for the A2630 and the GVP combo.  I've never heard this term before.  Is it simply the roms on the accel. boards?  Or something not so obvious?  Maybe 1 of the venders still has some old stock.

Hi Tenacious,

You can use the 2.1 Gig hard drive, but it MUST be partitioned as 2 - 1 Gig partitions.  Check the revision number of the Western Digital Controller chip, it should be either 04 or 08.  If it is a 02 then replace it with a 04 or 08.

@ Flagship

Thanks for the info!  This is my first experience with A2000s, I'm suprised at how many things must be upgraded to install OS3.5.  Are you aware of any remaining stocks of newer roms for the boards mentioned above?

@ iamaboringperson

Cut a guy a break! DoomMaster, where ever his is, has paid for his mistake many times over by now. Besides, it's Christmas, a time to forgive, forget, and certainly to be tolerant.  Tolerance should be one of the founding principles of any community. I hope that's true here.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Hi,

A quick check @ the Software Hut site shows GVP guru roms still available.

. . and i totaly agree from a human POV but if DM should stop to suggest people to:

"BUY this" (imperative without to know IF a guy CAN afford the price)

"REPLACE that" (often impossible to find or too expensive)

and so on, i should have absolutely nothing against DM.

His "informatic fundamentalism " often irritates people (me too).

He has changed avater and nick but his posts, are "quite" the same. ..  ever.

Ciao

Hmm.. If Flagship is Doommaster aka A2000king then he should request the Amiga.org team to let him return, not make a new account.. That only shows lack of respect for the work they put into this site and their decision to ban him

If flagship isn't Doomie, you sure seem to post very similar
