New A1200.....
« on: July 12, 2010, 11:13:15 PM »
Hi all! Well I have the A1200 running very nicely now! If you remember, I had an aweful time with the Subway USB adapter. Old thread here....   http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=52970&highlight=gizmo350

The apollo accelerator was the whole problem. It never really worked right from the beginning. Then after about a week it just completely died. I had purchased it from eBay. That was a HUGE waste of $160!!! So, I bought a GVP accelerator from SoftHut, popped in a 32MB simm and it works perfect. After I plugged it in I didn't even reinstall OS3.1. I simply reinstalled Poseidon and the USB ports worked perfectly. After I ran these commands:

C:AddUSBClasses
C:AddUSBHardware DEVS:USBHardware/subwayusb.device

the USB flash drive was recognised immediately. There were all my LHA's! So, I then ran the Poseidon update - awesome! Then installed MUI. More awesome-ness! Now I completely understand the Trident software and how the USB functions work. Then I upgraded to OS3.9. Wow, too cool! Then installed BB1. That's where I am now.

Couple of questions....

1. Boing Bag 2 starts correctly and asks "Do you want to install ROM update" along with BB2 update. Do I want to do that? Is that really going to flash my ROM. How can that be? Is it safe to do?

 2. I wanted to dupe my OS3.9 CD after installing MakeCD (BTW, thanks platon42 - you were absolutley correct - no mountlist needed with AMICDFS). I can read from my Sony DRX-720ul external CD/DVD drive with no problem (that's how I installed OS3.9) but MakeCD can't find a driver. I tell MakeCD that the device is USBSCSI.DEVICE but there is no available driver so can't copy CD. Is that because the CD Drive is not native thru the USB port or is it because there's really no driver for my drive? What USB drives are compatible with MakeCD when going thru the Trident software? Or is Trident just a bridge and MakeCD should just work?

3. I installed the IP stack and browser software from the OS3.9 CD. I didn't really mess around with it too much due to time but maybe I could get some help with that later?

4. After installing MUI, I set my resolution to SuperHiRez which give me a lot of flicker on my Commodore 2002 monitor. Is there a way to calm it down with newer software options in OS3.9 and/or MUI? Maybe set the refresh rate somehow? (Man, I need a scandoubler!)

5, How on earth can the OS3.9 emergency disk work correctly when using the Subway USB for my CD connection (I need a native CD drive - don't I.)

6. What's the best software to use to do a brick-level backup of my HDD for easiest recovery?

OK, I'll stop for now.....   ;-)

If you wish to easily backup your hard disk with a few clicks then EasyADFs Backup feature is useful.

1. The ROM cannot be flashed, instead the routines are patched in memory, so its safe to add the ROM updates.
2. Try a different CD Burner software.
3. If set to auto discover using DHCP, it should pick up an address from your router.
4. Try 70, 75 or 80 Hz to see if it improves otherwise a scan doubler with a modern monitor instead.
5. You will need to install the drivers on the Emergency disk and modify the user-startup file to load them.
6. Too many backup programs about to really recommend one.

1. I don't believe the ROM update will flash your ROM. I believe it just patches your ROM on startup. Should be safe....

2. Never tried MakeCD. I doubt CD burning will work real well through the subway because of the slowness and CPU overhead. Also, subway interferes with many programs so its not Ideal for some applications. How about adding a SATA port? Thats what I did.

http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=53499

3. Have you tried MiamiDX? It's worth a look...

4. Some color combinations may be better than others. Interlace will always flicker unless you are using a monitor with de-interlacing capability. NTSC will flicker less than PAL modes. Otherwise, Not much you can do to eliminate the problem without a flicker-fixer.

5. Look into the SATA CD-Drive. You'll get 1.6mb/sec vs around 250K/sec.

6. No need for special utilities. Simply plug in the disk you'd like to backup to into your subway USB.

open CLI - type:
copy SYS: NEWSYS: all

where "NEWSYS:" is the name of your external device.

That interface is the bomb!
But it looks like it's no longer available.
4xEIDE'99 Buffered Interface (with Allegro CDFS)
http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=194

As a matter of fact, it looks like AmigaKit has NO IDE interfaces available! :-(

That would be great to install a SATA slim-line CD-RW/DVD-RW unit directly into the case using the IDE to SATA interface with it. That would be perfect for me! External looks very quick and easy too! Yea, some more pics of your whole setup would be great!

Soooooooo, has anyone gat an external USB burner to burn with the Subway USB adapter using MakeCD or any other burning software?

I am really hoping that AmigaKit gets those new scan doublers tomorrow!!!!!!!

C'mon AmigaKit!!!!!!

We have 4-way buffered IDE interfaces here:

Unfortunately all the Indivision 1200s are now pre-sold since we reactivated the product link at the beginning of the week.

Sorry- our website allows preorders on products arriving shortly and it automatically removes the product when all stock is pre-sold (allocated to customer orders).

Customers are free to order items before they arrive in stock with us and that is what customers have been doing with Indivision 1200 this week.

There will be more stock arriving before we exhibit at the Amiwest show.

Son of a BEE-STING!
Well, may I ask when is the Amiwest show so that I can put this in my calendar?
Seriously, could you have stated that you were taking pre-orders on your website?

Might you be able to tell me when the 4xEIDE'99 Buffered Interface (with Allegro CDFS) might arrive again?

Can this item you mentioned be used with the IDE to SATA adapter?
http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/...roducts_id=532

Well, back in the closet it goes....  for now.

If your GVP-M Typhoon has the SCSI chip, you may be able to get a (even faster) fast SATA port using an ACARD SCSI->SATA adapter. I have no idea if that would work, but I have thought about it.

Unfortunately, my Typhoon (40mhz) has the SCSI but any software that uses the FPU for any amount of time will GURU. #8000000D "Coprocessor Protocol Violation".

I use an E-Matrix (40mhz) now and the 68882 FPU works great. I have swapped FPUs between boards, both seem to be good :(

The E-Matrix has a jumper wire that goes from one pin of the clock to one pin on the FPU. I wonder if the Typhoon something similar? Who knows...

Does your Typhoon have any a FPU? If so, any issues using the FPU? If not, does it have any extra jumper wires like my E-Matrix?

Ahhhh, I noticed that wire on your accelerator when I was checking out your rig. I thought that was odd. That explains it, well sort of. No the new Typhoon has no jumper wires ( they must have got the board design right this time). To tell you the truth, I have no clue as how to implement my FPU (isn't it a math co-processor?). All I know is that I read the description of the accelerator on SoftHuts website and AmigaKits website (I should not be saying stuff like this) and I thought that SoftHuts was a better accelerator for the money than Amigakits. Ackkkkkkk, I don't want to talk about AmigaKit right now as I am peeved at them. It's a conspiracy I tell Ya!!!!!
