Quake II (MorphOS) - Cannot fall back to software refresh
« on: June 29, 2010, 09:07:05 PM »
When ever I go to launch the game, I always get this error, and the game never loads.

Cannot fall back to software refresh

According to this page, this error means that I am running two copies of Quake II, and yet I am not.

I have tried installing the PAK files from various CD's but always end up with the same results.
Anyone have any idea why this would be happening?

Also, does anyone know who ported Quake II so I could maybe contact them?

Err, wait. Is that it? You're missing files then.

Speficically these files must be included as well:
Code: [Select]
gameppc.so
ref_soft.so
ref_tinygl.so

I had them before, but then deleted my original install directory to start all over.. When I copied the executable back over, I forgot to tell the lister to "show all" before copying, hence the reason I was lacking the files this time.

The irony here that I would have probably had this working a long time ago if I was have caught my mistake while I was doing it. Another 4am in the morning, and I'm falling asleep blunder. :)

The first distro I was using, had three PAK files. I'm not sure where I got that CD, but I know it was the problem, though it may have just required an update.

Anyhow, it's running, I'm very happy, and thank you once again for answering this for me a second time... ;)

Additional info for those running this on an eMac.

The eMac screen can be a bit too dark for a few games when played in GL mode, Quake 2 is one example of this.

In order to remedy this problem in Quake 2, you'll need to go into your Baseq2 directory and edit the file "config.cfg"

Search for a line that says "set gl_modulate "1""

Then change the 1 to a 2 or a 3, then save.

That's it, you should now have a much brighter display!
