New GVP A1200 Accelerators...

Hi all....

Anyone know if the new 40MHz GVP Typhoon accelerators from Software Hut fit the A1200 non-tower?
Do they need crazy cooling contraptions? Are they 5vdc or 3.3 vdc?
Can I just pop it in and go?

I see no reason why these remakes of GVP boards should behave any different to the originals. In other words, you should be fine to put one in a wedgey 1200.

I have one that I bought from Softhut.com and it works great in my standard desktop A1200.  However, you may have to leave the trapdoor off.

Well that sucks... Yes this replacement motor is fine for your car.. Provided you drive with the bonnet up....

If its big fat simms I can understand.

My Coby fits snugly, though I did drill some holes to keep the SM processor happy.

I got mine two weeks ago and it doesn't fit with the trap door on. I'm waiting for SoftHut to follow up with the manufacturer as the SIMM socket and RAM module is too thick. I wonder if they use several different types of SIMM modules or SIMM sockets as some users say it fits fine and some that it does not fit.

So no I have AmigaKit's new 40Mhz 030, not Software Hut's. My advice, go with Amiga Kit.

One little thing - Software Hut's GVP card is $45.00 cheaper (for U.S. buyers anyway). That would more than buy the 32Mb SIMM if you don't have one handy...

Yes, the AmigaKit cards are a bit more expensive, and only come with 16Mb of RAM, but RAM should be cheap, and the card has not given me any issues what so ever. No over heating, no problems with the trap door, etc.

At first I cringed in regret for having spent so much, but now I feel like I got a good solid deal. And it's new, so it should be good for years to come.

Great Link bbond007! Exactly what I needed to know. Specifally what type heatsink is attached to the GVP. I recently bought an Apollo 40MHz card off ebay and it lasted a whole week. It had the exact same type of heat sink glued to the CPU. I even attached a laptop heatsink to the exisitng heatsink as the card seemed real unstable until I did that. I was working on installing a Subway USB when, on a reboot, the Apollo failed. I'm not sure if it was a heat related but the GVP uses the same heatsink and seems to work. So, since the USB requires an accelerator I am looking for another accelerator. I was very curious about the heatsink. Thanks for the posts all.

IIRC for some versions of the 030, there was literally no point in adding a heatsink due to the way the package was setup.

Either way at 40Mhz there really oughtn't to be the need for a heatsink at all on an 030.

The GVPs though were the absolute bomb. I think that even the Phase 5 cards struggled to beat them and only really did so on the basis that the GVPs used non standard (read: hugely pricey) simms.

GVP's SCSI solution (--edit-- for the A1200) though was second to none.

Mine that came from SoftHut does have the MMU. It's also advertised on SoftHut.com. I haven't tested it though as I don't have any MMU enabled software.
