Compatability issues with KS 2.04
« on: April 22, 2010, 03:37:57 PM »
Recently I've discovered there seems to be issues with earlier games and KS 2.04 ROM's.  Specifically, so far, Faery Tale Adventure and (possibly) Lemmings.

What was so radically different in KS 2.04 that trashes games and other applications?  Seeing where most of these boot from floppy, it has to be the ROM and not the disk portion of the OS.

Or has this topic already been discussed to death?

Oh, I should specify, I'm running an A20000 with 6 Mb of RAM and 6.2/6.3 mobo.

The list of incompatible games is substantial.  That is why rom switchers are still popular.  You could also keep a stock A500 with KS1.3.

To be precise the games trash themselves.

The most common reason is that KS 2.x and later hog larger portion of the available system RAM than with KS 1.x. Another reason is that the games make assumptions about the memory layout and use memory without actually allocating it first (say for example assuming that certain address in chip memory can be used after a fresh boot).
