How can this be?  Does the rom of the 2630 map the memory it to the wrong place?

No, it is just the way it is. I know this from experience and it is backed up by the original 2630 manual which came with my A2500. You can add just 4mbs more of Zorro II ram--less if you use a Zorro II RTG card. The 2632 is the the only memory upgrade for this accelerator. You would be better of getting a GVP accelerator. They are faster, come with the same 4mb base memory, and leave you the full 8mb Zorro II memory. And above all, they come up for sale a lot more often than 2632s and usually go for less. I sold one last month for around $130.
A2500 owned since 1993 with A2630/DKB 2632, DKB Megachip, GVP EGS Spectrum, A2320 and GVP HC+8 on the inside and a DCTV on the outside. A4000D with CSPPC, Cybervision 64 and a Flicker Magic flicker fixer. A4000T Toaster Flyer & CSMKII. All systems completly retro and classic and mostly used to do geometic art as in my avatar.

Thanks for all of the input, guys.  I think at this point, if I could get 4 MB on the Zorro bus for (relatively) cheaps, I'd be happy.  Finding a 2632 would be better, and upgrading to a GVP card would be very nice, but honestly I'm not really out for more speed, just for less 'Out of Memory' issues.  I accept the fact that my 25 year old computer isn't going to be fast and I have no issues with that.  I've got modern machines if I'm in the mood for 'fast'. :D
Amiga: ...an elegant computer for a more civilized age.

Amiga 2000 Workbench 3.1 (A2630 @ 25 Mhz / ECS Agnus & Super Denise / 1 MB Chip, 4 MB Fast / GVP 2000-HC, 2 GB HDD & Plextor CD-ROM / 1080S CRT

I appreciate you being content, even an unexpanded Amiga is fun for me.

OTOH, I and some others here have been told (by yet other ppl here) that we have the "Amiga desease".  Grin.  This desease compels me to upgrade an Amiga to do everything modern (the web, Mp3s, USB, etc), if possible.  I guess there are more expensive afflictions.

The secret to inexpensive upgrading is to not be in a hurry, but no pressure here.
