It was in 89-90 when i got my A500. It's really said here already so i'll quote the next that match mine (with some edits :)):

I had a C=64 for quite some time.  Then a friend of mine bought an Amiga 500 in about '89 or so, then I HAD to have one.

Must have been around 1990 when I sold my Suzuki GS1000, but at the last minute the buyer couldn't get all the cash. He gave me his Amiga 1000 to top up the money ! I picked up an A1200 around 1994, and towered it (Still here), so I've never really left theAmiga scene.

First computer was a Sinclair ZX81. That was hard work !

My interest started when i was about 9 and a friend of mine had an A500. I remember playing Golden Axe and Chase Hq and seeing the Budbrain demo on it and I loved it.

I got my first one, an A500 Plus when i was around 11 or 12 years old.

Sold it when i was around 16 to buy a pentium peecee :(

A year later (and really missing my Amiga) a friend of mine gave me his broken A500.

Luckily i still had most of my Amiga games, joysticks and Action Replay MKIII, external floppy and A590 hard drive.

Changed the broken floppy drive and broken PSU, added some ram and fitted a kickstart switcher and kickstart 2.04 and i have never looked back :)

When I saw the first 1000 out of commodore corby. When the first 500 was available.  Whenever that was.

My first play with any computer was a Nascom-1 and a Commodore Pet 2001 in May 1978, (HB computers ltd, Kettering were trying to demo their wares to the school), fortunately my friends brother owned the company so I got to see quite a few toys over the next year, one of the first VIC20's too. By 79 I was coding on the school Pet... ;) I'm old now ;)

My own first computer took a few more years and I bought a Oric Atmos in 84 then a Commodore 64 (Got a broken vic20 case + a 64 board from the Commodore Corby, black market) in quick sucession, folllowed by a A500 in I think in 88 when I started work, by that time I was programming PCs and Dec Vax's.

In 1989 I upgraded my C64 to an A500 (1Mb) (I used it for games only),  I was then silly enough to but a CDTV, I ordered it from Currys at a cost or 500 quid and collected it on it’s release date (1991) – I dumped all my commodore stuff in 1992 to buy a Philips CD-i. – In the mid 90’s I moved to Dallas, I was over in the UK visiting in 2000 and went to Battersea car boot sale and there was a mint, boxed A600, complete with Workbench discs, mouse, joystick, user guides, PSU, scart connector, several games and several demo disc’s along with the original receipt  dated 1/5/93 from Dixons in Nottingham for 279.99. I asked the guy how much and he said that he had no clue what it was or if it worked as he had picked it up in a house clearance but if I could use it I could have it for a pound ……. ONE POUND ! – I was going back to the USA in a couple of days so I left it in the loft at my parents house and never plugged it in. To cut a long story short, I just moved back to the UK and my mother said that the loft was full of my crap (I had forgotten all about the A600) – I went up there and found it along with a NES, 2 SNES, 2 C64, 2 C2N, Philips CDI, SMS and all my kids toys ! – Couldn’t care less about the rest of the stuff but had to see if the A600 worked ……. And it does and I love it more than ever, as the demo “Technological Death” once said ……. AMIGA RULZ – ALLWAYS ! – OK, now you’ve all fallen asleep or gave up reading, I’ll stop !
Commodore Amiga A600 KS 2.0 (37.300) & WB 2.05 (37.71) bought from a car boot in Battersea for 1GBP ! :roflmao:

My first computer was a Commodore C-116 which was replaced by a C-128 later on.

In 1986, I had a friend who got an AMIGA 1000, and I was hooked immediately. Then the A500 came out and I was lucky to get one in 1987. An A2000 followed in 1990 or so.

Then I started to study and the professors at my university convinced the students that they wouldn't get anywhere without a PC. Well, I still was young and quite naive at that time, so I believed them and bought one aswell. It was a 486 DX-2 66 which costed an insane amount of money and it was horrible.

In the following years I completely lost track about what was going on in Amigaland, the last machine that I noticed was the CDTV. The AGA machines, Commodore bankruptcy etc etc, all passed without my knowledge.

After spending a few years with PCs, the Amiga fever caught me again in the late 90ies (I think ~1998), so I bought an A1200 with PPC and all the blows and whistles. Now I have a nice collection of different machines including an A1000, A2000, a few 500s and 600s. I am putting some effort in Aros at the moment, the classics are used for gaming, DPaint and stuff like that. My work horse machines are all running Ubuntu though and I have one Windows XP machine for Cubase.

I unwrapped my 1st Commodore Vic 20 from under the x-mas tree in 1981. The following year I had a c64 under the tree. Next came the c128. Then around the start of the school year in 1985 my father bought an Amiga 1000 from One Byte Computers in Uncasville, CT. By x-mas 1986 he was back at One Byte and bought himself an Amiga 2000 and me MY OWN (not shared with him or my brother) Amiga 500. Now I had MY OWN Computer in my room I started calling local bbs. I worked the entire summer of 87 to save for a US Robotics 9600 HST modem (something like $800 bucks). Needless to say there were not many local boards with HST capability so next came the long distance calls. After a few months of these I figured it was time to put up my own BBS. The board ran on the 500 for about a year. At that point my father agreed to split the cost with me for my own 2000. I only had about 1/4 of the money but promised I would pay him back the rest. (never happened) At this point life was great. I had a high speed modem so the board quickly grew and I had an endless supply of games for the 500. In 1991 I mail ordered (and paid for myself) my final Amiga a 3000T. I used it happily until 97 when I finally gave in and bought a PC. Somewhere along the line I gave away the 500 and sold the 2000 for pennies but the 3000T sat in my parents attic until last x-mas. I was home and saw her sitting there and with the help of everyone here she back up and running better than ever.

I smoked, but didn't inhale.

PCs weren't really for games until the 486 came along. Amiga had awesome games. Don't forget the little war with Atari. Boy that victory was shortlived. I'm not a console person so an Amiga 500 was the only real choice.

:(

Boy I'm getting depressed thinking about this. Getting a 1200HD cheap 2nd hand picked up my spirits... It was my first internet computer.

I owned a 1000 back in '85.

Yeah, aver the years it waned, I've alway loved being on the cutting edge and Amiga left the cutting edge permanently in the early '90s.  I came back with the dream that Amiga would come back, that being dashed, I hang around out of nostalgia.

I went to PCs because of work, but all my main computers now, home and work are Macs.  OS X was attractive and once they switched to Intel I haven't looked back...

Quote from: runequester;537230
When did your interest in the amiga start? With what machine?

If it ever waned, when and how did it restart?

What machines did you go to afterwards/inbetween/in addition?

What we\'re witnessing is the sad, lonely crowing of that last, doomed cock.

Bought my first A1000 used at an Amiga/PC computing store in Mundelein, IL late '86, after lusting over one since it was first released. Used that for a very short bit before realizing or deciding that upgrading its ram was not a logical thing to do when the A500's were so much cheaper out of the box. Sold my A1000 and put that dough towards an A500 with Kickstart 1.2 and a 1084s monitor. Used that to sample sounds for several audio projects back in the day and also used it to write papers in school and to play games of course. Wasn't until the early 90's that I got back into the 1000 because everyone was unloading them for peanuts and they'd come with all sorts of ram typically. Bought a 1300 Genlock and used it to add titles and such to peoples wedding vids, home movies or their kids' sporting events. A1000 will always have a special place in my heart. Would just like a fatter Agnus, 3.1 in ROM, internal HD and a faster CPU in an A1000 case and I'd be all "set" again :)

I heard about them so I picked up a 500 from freecycle.

Then I set up Winuae as a maxed out 68060 setup. The end. Might end up with morphos on powerbook or an x1000, time to wait and see.

I started with a Timex Sinclair 1000, and progressed to a Sinclair QL. In late 1986 I went to a store where you could select all the components and build your own PC clone. The turbo XT's were the hot ticket. I picked out all my components, and told the salesman what I had selected. He asked me if I had looked at the Amiga computer. I said no, and he took me and showed me the Amiga 1000. The full color GUI blew me away. And then he grabbed the desktop with the mouse and drug it out of they way to reveal a picture of a naked woman. I said "Screw that XT clone. I WANT ONE OF THOSE AMIGA'S!"  ;-)

I've never had an Amiga as my primary computer, but my grandfather had an Amiga 1000 for quite a while. Some time after I left college I got intrested in "fringe" operating systems and started playing with AROS and Syllable. Sometime in this period I picked up an A4000D and a Prometheus PCI adapter to play with. Can't say I did anything terribly intersting with it.

At some point it became clear that while the Amiga and its operating system were special in its day, it doesn't make much sense to use an OS derived from it. Design decisions that made sense in 1985 don't necessarily make that much sense for today's hardware. So I stopped playing with AROS and stopped paying attention to the Amiga scene for the most part.

Hyperion's tease with the A-Eon site got me interested again, but now that the specs have been mostly revealed I doubt I'll be picking one up unless it's a lot cheaper than I expect.

I never actually owned one until I was 18. By the time I was 19, I had two

The first apps that got me fully hooked were Protracker and OctaMED.
