Cheapest internet solution for A4000T
« on: November 21, 2009, 06:30:34 PM »
I would like to get my A4000T online - what is the cheapest way to do it? The only options I know are:

1. Via Deneb Zorro USB controller + USB modem <-- around 160 euro (!)

2. X-Surf 3 <-- around 100 euro

Are there any other options as the above cost more than 100 euro each?

Thanks ^-^

What about Prometheus PCI? It can be had for €111 from Amigakit. You can put a PCI ethernet card in it AND a Voodoo 3, which are practically free.

@koshman
Not a bad idea but I already got an RTG card so I did not want to put another busboard in there

@tenshin

Maybe scour AmiBay or eBay for an older Zorro ethernet card?

You can get AriadneII or similar cards from Ebay for around €75 - €100, still cheaper than a (new) Xsurf.

If you have another PC (preferably with Linux, but you can do it with Windows too) nearby, that can work pretty well actually...

Only thing I'm not sure about is what speed the 4000 will support on the serial port..

If it's limited to 19,200 (that's about where my 500 maxes) or 38,400, then you're talking dial up speeds..  If you can get into the 100's of K, that's not bad bad for a single connection.  Not sure what the 4000 port can pull tho.

Of course, ethernet is better..  ;-)

With new8n1.device instead the built-in serial.device from Workbench you can go to 56kbps.

 Using an old Zorro serial card will up null-modem transfers to something more decent, like ~230kbps or more.

 Nothing that reach the X-Surf transfer rates. But faster or equivalent to an old A2065 (300kbps at best).

Good choice! Not only do you get a NIC, but clockports and an IDE (ghetto, but functional) interface.
