IDE-FIX nag screen
« on: August 22, 2009, 06:20:16 AM »
I just received my amiga 1200 from amigakit.  I'm amazed that it came from the UK to New Jersey in only 4 days.

Anyway just installed OS 3.1 on the 4 gig CF card.  Everything is cool except for this window for IDE-FIX that keeps bugging me.  Anyone know how this got installed in the first place?  How much does Oliver Kastl charge to make it go away?

Thanks.

Ok. There are two ways to get an IDE-fix key:

1. you can still buy it. http://www.vesalia.de sell it for 25 € plus shipping.
2. you can try to mail the original author for a free key
olliATNOSPAMelaborate-bytes.com

and don't tell me you can't afford that...  Oliver Kastl is a great Amiga programmer and deserves the support.

Or as he doesnt have a drive over 4GB, then he can edit the S:Startup-sequence and alter the C:IDEFIX line to ;C:IDEFIX.

I partitioned it as, 500MB (FFS), 1.6GB (SFS/02) and 1.6GB (SFS/02). This keeps it within all the limitations just incase.

Thanks.  I think for now I'll just edit the startup sequence.  But it's good to know down the road if I get a bigger drive, I can still purchase the program.

The ide fix email address (idefix@elaborate-bytes.com) does not seem to exist anymore.  I tried sending an email and it bounced back.  Where is this Oliver Kastl person now?  Elaborate Bytes' website makes no mention if IDE FIX.  That other german amiga software store that another user listed states that the software version of IDE FIX is no longer available.  My question:  Why would Amigakit still bundle demo software that can no longer be registered?  What exactly do I have to type in the shell in order to access and edit the statup sequence file?

Oliver is tied with CloneCD/CloneDVD development, at least.

I just sent an email to Individual Computers.  I can't be the only one with this problem.  There must be others running A1200s with WB 3.1.  These are the kind of things that turn people to software piracy.  There should be a new rule.  Demo software should not be included in any kind of computer system without the consent of the buyer.  I would have gladly paid more if the full version was included upon purchase.

Well, first to edit your startup-sequence just type 'ed S:startup-sequence' in a shell ... (Without quotes, of course) If for some reason that doesn't work, just type 'ed foo' , then use 'Open...' from the Project menu to find your Startup-Sequence ....
then, you'd comment out the 'C:IDEFix line, like Follett mentioned above...
As for demo software not being included without the consent of the purchaser,  I do understand your frustration, but I doubt it will ever change.... Even my last PC had a HDD full of demo software, and nothing really useful....

If you have the Amiga Forever package from cloanto, you can use the registered version of idefix that is there. This is what i use with my a1200 and works perfectly!

A simple solution: If you move the IDEFIX program out of the C drawer in your System partition, it will not start on the next reboot.  You will have to select show all files from the Icons menu in the C drawer to see IDEFIX

Thanks to everyone who has been looking into this for me.  I still think it is weak to bundle an old program that does not have a clear path to registration.  Jens Schoenfeld is telling me I need a dongle.  I guess I'll disable the program, but looking down the road, will I encounter this problem if I eventually upgrade to a bigger harddrive/CF drive and OS 3.9?

Thanks again to everyone.

No - CacheCDFS (part of IDEFIX) is included in OS 3.9 and does not need registration key. Also OS 3.9 features official NSDPatch which does a lot of IDEFIX's functions.

a dongle?  maybe he refers to this?

do you need this on your A4000?
what did Oliver Kastl say?  It's his software, even if dated he should still accept the registration or release it.
this issue comes up on other sites: http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=21268
try this: http://www.uber-leet.com/index.php?page=idefix97
if you still are gettng nowhere with no one, pm me.

Jens responded to me.  So far I haven't heard from Oliver.

I've said it before:   Thanks to all for going out of your way and helping me.  I picked the right time to get back into the Amiga game.  Hopefully when I become more savy with Amiga hardware and software, I'll be able to help others as well as everyone has been helping me.
