Amiga 500 won't start up
« on: October 25, 2003, 07:56:23 PM »
Hi folks,

I am a bit worried bout my good ol' amiga 500.
This weekend, I wanted play some old stuff on my amiga.
So built up to whole set and started the amiga.
By switching on, the screen lit once, for a very short time and got black again. Pressing the caps key, I can recognize that power must be in the machine.

I turned it off and meassured the power supply. Everything seems ok?

What's wrong with da amiga? Are the kick roms outta order?

Please help me.

Thanx and best regards,
Da Harry

HI ,mine was half dead until i find out wats the problem , in my case chip for floppy was dead and that coused my amiga not to work. I bought the chip from local service and all problems were done. Maybe its problem with the power? :-(

Dust inside the machine? Twice my A1200 refused to boot up properly (going scarily mad with the hard drive the 2nd time round- whirring in dagerous ways), but a small vacuum cleaner (like one of those portable ones) might do the trick. You'd have to open the amiga first (But-oh no!- that would void your warranty :-D ).

Another time it was the monitor. Check by connecting your Amiga to something else, if possible.

@daharry2003:

Because of time, heat and vibrations the socketed chips in the A500 will try to move out of their sockets a bit. A good idea would be to open the machine and press all the socketed chips firmly into place. This fixed my A2000 when it didnt function.

If pushing down the chips doesn't work, sometimes pulling them out and reinstalling them does the trick.

If all else fails then try washing the motherboard in warm, soapy water and drying it over an open fire...

then look on ebay and see if Redrumloa has any refurbished A500's left...

Well, first of all, I want to express my big surprise due to the overwhelming many threads posted in only one night...

1. I connect my amiga usually to my tv.
2. Nothing but the caps key led is shining or flashing. No power led on or disk drive led.

Still some ideas?

Thany a'lot.

Hmm... does the disk drive kick in if you cold boot it with a floppy in?

I doubt its the kickstart causing that.

Is it an a500+?

@daharry2003:

How many times is the caps-key flashing?

Check out this Amiga Selftest Page to see what the keyboard is telling you.

ummmmmmmm, try getting a voltmeter, try it on the the power and disk drive led's, also, instead of using a vacuum cleaner, get one of those static-free , water-free, everything-free  :-) air-in-a-can from computer stores, and then blow around the keyboard area including where you can under chips etc...

Quote
The keyboard also has its own processor, RAM, and ROM. It also has a selftest that performed on power up in the following sequence.

Performs a checksum on the ROM.
Checks the 64 bytes of keyboard RAM.
The timer is being tested
Performs a handshake with the computer and gives the result of the selftest.

If the keyboard does not pass the test, it will tell you through the blinking of the caps lock light.

One blink: Keyboard ROM check failed.
Two blinks: Keyboard RAM check failed.
Three blinks: Watch dog timer failure.
Four blinks: A short between two lines or the special control keys.

READ THIS (please). Don't panic if your keyboard flashes once when you switch on. THIS IS PERFECTLY NORMAL. Every Amiga in the entire universe does this.

check all that out  :-D  and give us more info

Checking out.
So. None of the leds are neither lightning nor flashing. Except the caps key. It lights once when switching power on.
Hum?

Well?
