Opera was not always free, you did have to pay for it at one point, i think i still have a trial version somewhere, do a search on a site like astalavista you will find keygens for it for windows and linux, also as noted above by someone else you have to pay for the symbian version still and also the wii version (although with wii points).

Wii version costs you 500 points / £3.50.
Specs:
A1200PT, mediator c/w voodoo 3 2000, sb128, 60G HDD,OS3.9,LITEON CDR, nec 4x4 changer,External Scan Doubler,Cocolino adapter,PS2 keyboard adaptor.

Morphos 2.6, mini mac g4 @ 1.25ghz.

Yeah it was free for a little time though, unlucky for me i missed that chance to get it, still aint got round to getting it, but dont really see a need for it atm.

I started using Opera at around version 6 something. It had ad banners that ran at the top and if you paid for opera you could get rid of the banners.

I just ignored them. Soon after, they stopped having a banner version. You do have to pay for a full version of Opera Mobile for cell phones, but Opera Mini is free

The point is that even with banners no one HAD to pay for Opera.

I'm going to stick with my rememberance of not using Opera because you had to pay for it. I even remember when Opera first came out and thinking that I should be using it.

I confirm, first versions of Opera for desktop were commercial, until they switched to the banner-based free version.
