The text looks great but let down by the roughness of the gadgets and other GUI objects.

Even after a decade the grey still looks drab and the blue weak.

Hyperion know that 99.9% of all sales will come from the present Amiga community and try to reasure it. But they are reassuring by suggesting nothing has changed since OS3.9.

IMHO this should have been kept as a 'OS3.9 look' skin to be used for existing software.

To me and it seems others the true face of the Amiga is the boing ball and the colours of the original Amiga.

Above all I think the community needs to know that the Amiga OS is vibrant, exciting and colourful once more.

Like the W95 look? Man, that's crazy. I thought the Win3.1 look was better. The start menu is not very intuitive. It takes too many clicks to activate a program in the Windows start menu. I think the MacOS X version of the task bar is much better than Windows: it shows all the quick launchable apps and indicates which ones are currently opened. The only good thing about Win98/2K/XP is the quick launch part, but it's too limited. OS/2 Warp's launcher was better than Windows', too.

OS4 has A LOT more features than 3.9.

Looks really good to me. Slick and intuitive.
AmigaOS enthusiast since 1993.

Just IMO, but too many people are frittering over the choice of colors and rounded-versus-square window borders and whatnot.

Get the damned OS up, running, and stable on the manyvaried PPC platforms first.  Hell's Bells, if it looks like 1.3 but runs stably, then so be it.

Remember, it's about the applications.

It looks like the load has crashed the AmigaWorld.net database, but HMetal has mirrored them here.

The screenshots are geat IMO - it still looks like an Amiga, but they've added all the nice features like gradients.  Cannot wait to see more :-D

Difficult to judge because:
- not a lot of screens to judge on (where are menus,...)
- it is only 80% finished
- there are 4 screens and they are all different, so which is the one i will get when i install OS4?

Good things:
- the fonts

Negative points:
- still looks old and dated (looks like a 3.9)
- i don't see any work of a graphics artist here, none. The textured window border and the grey pattern look ugly (mysterious graphic artist: i hope you will not include this in the final look)
- it looks cluttered, depressive, dull
- the glowicons don't really cut it anymore (i had hoped that Mason would do some magic with icons somewhere in OS4)

For me, really dissapointing. I hope a lot changes in the last 20%. (btw see Simoami's stuff on what can be done to make a modern look)

Hi Hans-Joerg

Great work! what hardware were the screenshots running on? CSPPC?

It doesn't seem like anyone noticed (in the amiga2.htm screenshot) that the voodoo 1024x768x16 screenmode is draggable.  Is that because voodoo hardware allows for draggable screens, or have you guys figured out how to do dragging on any gfx card?

Apart from the brushed steel used as window background (shamelessly riped from Aqua), it looks most definitely promising. At least it shows the improving potential of the GUI versatility. And those antialiased fonts are (at long last!) utterly gorgeous. Does that mean standard support for Freetype/Unicode? We can only hope so...

As you stated: These are just 80%! ;-)
But please don't expect too much wizardry - the style in OS4 will still be "GlowIcons".

I can't see much of my work in the screenshot.
More to come :-D

In my Opinion it is essential to builed a cooperate design concept for the hole system first. Which will carefully be expanded...

But you also maybe know, that programers are a special species - you have to fight for every coloured pixel ;-)

Have to agree with Martin, and I think his icons are great anyway - the GlowIcons look on AmigaOS is definately nicer than the average Windows look - why change the look?  :-D

I like  8-)   Very nice.  There are a few things I will be changing on my config (the window gadgets need to be 3D look, and the screen titlebar needs to be a different colour - I liked the wood effect on some of the older screenshots), but for the default it's fine.  I rather like GlowIcons as well, so am quite happy these haven't been changed much.

A couple of points:
1. Where are the menus?  I guess to keep fairly consistent with OS3.9 they are pull-down from the titlebar as default, but colours etc - it would be nice to see a screenshot of these.

2. Why do we still not have a scroll bar in the Shell?

You might not have noticed it, but it's running on PPC. Look at the version info visible in some of the shots. Exec version 50.1... That's the PPC native exec.

...running on one PPC card type in a couple of carefully selected machines.

So I repeat:

Get it up and working on the manyvaried PPC platforms.  I.e., all of those super-expensive A1 boards, bVision cards, etc. etc.
