Nokia premiere combined mobile phone/games console
« on: February 12, 2003, 08:45:05 PM »
Nokia have premiered a combined mobile phone and games console called the N-Gage. It is said to have excellent 3D capabilities and will feature multiplayer gaming via Bluetooth.

Read the Special Reserve article here

In light of this one wonders just how bad a taste the failure of the Nokia deal left in Amiga Inc's mouth?

I'm sure the Nokia deal meant a lot to Amiga, I feared that Amiga would have to close down, when I read that Nokia choose to cancel the project.

The N-gage is a GBA ripoff if the price is right I guess it will take off and become the first real succesfull cell phone/gamesystem.

I must admit I look forward to see how well it's received, the design is really geared towards gaming and I wonder if people will accept that look?

Still, more game capable devices should be an advantage for Amiga (Amiga-Anywhere allready runs on Symbian), we will see if they can get Amiga Anywhere to take off soon enough...

Amiga-Anywhere allready runs on Symbian?
Do we have any proof of this?

Besides, where is the memory card slot to stick in those amiga games?
Or will they at some point be avaible online-

Hello
Amiga DE run on top of INTENT.
Tao Group - Psion had agreement about porting INTENT to Symbian / Epoc.
Therefore AmigaDE will run on Symbian.

With the field already crowded with the Big Boys, why would Amiga Inc even bother?  Don't give me the "portable" shtick, that doesn't matter to the end user at all.

Depends what you mean by "Big Boys"!  In Japan, Sharp have over 70% of the PDA market sewn up...yet only 3% of the US and UK markets makes them little league.  The speed of change in mobile data industry means anyone with decent product and "killer app" (always hard to find that one!) could have a shot, especially now Amiga Inc has some big-boy connections.

Hey!! Special Reserve! I bought my A1200 off these guys, way long ago. They used to be MASSIVE Amiga dealers. Nice to see they are still going.

Well, I don't think the NGage will take-off as a Game-machine simply because of these facts

1) the price is unreasonable high it will be at least 2-3 times higher than for it's competitor the GBA (which also does 3D)

2) technically the NGage is of a lower quality than the GBA (lower res screen, fewer colors, lower spec sound etc.)

3) the controls are abysmall, the design of it is simply put awful

not to mention that it will probably go the same way as the Nokia 5510 (I think) you now the Youth phone with radio built in (nobody bougt that one)

By the term, "Big Boys", I was referring to Sega/Sammy and Nintendo.  It would be damn hard to penetrate any market they are already in...
