Game project upstart.
« on: August 31, 2002, 12:08:07 PM »
Recently on #amiga.org we (Slackbladder and Kuan_Ti) had the idea to start up a project to create a Space Flight sim, a project on which we would like to involve you.

We think it can be done?

What we are asking now is: your opinion, suggestions, remarks, ...  as these will help us descide if it is worth it to continue this enourmous challange.

Also, anyone interessted in helping us (programming, sound, gfx,..) let us know.

We Need Your Talent

Already working on one.  Almost done.  Been hitting people upside the head to help get money at the different amiga cons to get it finished and published.  No real takers on the scale that I'm looking for.  At this point the project has moved off the Amiga Platform to Windows, however it is using a code abstration layer (which are Amiga OS API calls.  AmigaWin32.c) to allow it to be ported to whereever (and therefore back to AmigaOS).  It really won't be runnable on an Amiga without a modern processor (the 600 Mhz G3 will do fine), but a 060 or 200 Mhz 604 PPC isn't going to cut it.  It runs decently on a 700Mhz Athlon (gives you an idea of the CPU requirements).  It won't be released back on the Amiga Platform until the MesaGL port by Hyperion is done for OS4 (and of course OS4 is done).

If the people doing this new flight sim game needs some routines, I'm willing to offer some (depending on what is needed).

(If anyone knows any PC publishers with real money, I'm looking to get it published as a real commericial game.  I've been working on it since '98.  It's original enough that there isn't anything out there like it!)

Interesting !
Did you try to contact Hyperion to get it published for the Amiga ?
Maybe you shouldn't be too "demanding" (money speaking) when it comes to the Amiga market... the PC market is another story, of course.
It would be really nice to have a powerfull 3D game for the A1+OS4 soon !
Come on...  ;-)

"Maybe you shouldn't be too "demanding" (money speaking) when it comes to the Amiga market"

But isn't that the point?  Why shouldn't I be?  I'm doing this game for two reasons, because I enjoy it and to make money.  Unfortunately, the enjoyment of programming this doesn't pay the bills.  The simple reality is that the amiga market is so small, it could be nothing but considered giftware for it.  My market would be any AmigaOne (or higher) Amigas with a good 3D video card.  How many do you think I will honestly sell in the Amiga Market?  100-500 at best?  At $30 profit (IF I sold it myself) comes to $3000 - $15000 profit.  For 5 years work?!?

No one in the Amiga market has the money to pay for a real state of the art game.  I mean, think how much a current game costs to make.

Lets say you have 3 programmers at $50K each a year.  Work on a game for two years that's $300,000.  That isn't including animations, graphic artists, musicians, distribution, manuels, marketing, actually printing(which is different then just doing a manual) and manufacture of the disks and box, contract lawyers, etc.

Sorry for the rant, but when at best at one of the shows I got an offer for $10,000 I nearly choaked.  While I appreaciated the offer, it really drove home the dismil shape things are in.  That would pay for 1-2 programmers with day jobs to a make shareware.  I have about 6+ months left of coding, and that wouldn't cover much, and I still need music, and an opening/end/during etc. animations/cut scenes.  I can do them but it takes time and money like anything else.

I really don't mean to make this message sound depressing.  On the lighter note, I will be releasing (if possible) the game for the A1 +OS4 machines that can run it.  I hope it shouldn't be too hard to port back.  But I don't expect to make any money on it(in the Amiga Market), but I am looking forward to see it running on an Amiga again.

Hi,

If we do continue the project, it'll be for the latest hardware (i.e. AmigaOne).
