The Great Amiga Wars Of 2002 ???
« on: April 15, 2002, 11:18:32 PM »
The Amiga scene is really heating up now as competing firms get ready to roll out new Hardware / OS software.  I just hope that all disputes are resolved amicably. The following statement from Thendic doesn’t seem to help matters. It would be better if all parties discussed their differences in private as opposed to washing their dirty laundry in public.

Update: the link above has been removed by Thendic.  Hopefully they got the point?

As much as this can be interpreted as petty, I agree that there needs to be some form of unity within the market right now, but I think we have to acknowledge the key phrase:

"We would like very much to cooperate with Amiga Inc. "

Vaporware is cheap. Sure, they can issue tantalizing press releases telling how wonderful their product is, how they are going to make your computing experience so wonderful, and how the other guys have it all so wrong. Fine, but until you can click on it and have it show up at your door, they are blowing so much hot air.

Erm...Is this a proffesional company??

I mean ..even though they're French doesn't mean they can't hire someone to translate it to proper English, does it?

And it also doesn't give them much points just blurting all this stuff out instead of talking to A Inc.

This reeks of IWin (remember that  :-D)

This is what I don't get...

Why on earth would Amiga Inc. be against selling more copies of it's product, AmigaOS 4? If they aren't against this, you could have fooled me!

If I wanted to sell as many copies of AmigaOS 4 as possible I would try to remove as many barriers to using AmigaOS as possible. Having several means for running AmigaOS would make the potential market wider and would also create competition among hardware developers, lowering the cost of adopting AmigaOS.

It seems clear to me that Amiga Inc's problem with bplan et al was not anything they claim it is, but rather the threat that the MorphOS+AmigaOS combo would become superior to AmigaOS on other platforms. This begs the question: so what would be so bad about that?!

Amiga Inc. has some serious problems in the area of testicular fortitude. They are afraid that their so-envisioned contribution to the market is less valuable than bplan's and thus want to commit hara-kari to save face. Instead of choosing to provide better solutions for their potential customers they have decided to 'protect their interests' by restricting the market for their product. Do they really plan to make more money from higher prices in this endeavor? Whatever their screwy plan is I have a feeling it's going to fail, and they will try to drag Amigans down with them.

Lots of expensive software is sold with pirate protections. They use encrypted licenses, polynomial timed licenses, hardware dongles, etc. None of these are any less difficult to bypass than what eyetech has done. What this is *really* about is trying to squash MorphOS, despite how much more useful it could potentially make AmigaOS.

Amiga Inc, you suck

I don't know if I maight have missed something, but I didn't think pure AmigaOS4 applications would run on 3.9 and therefore not on MorphOS either, if this is the case, then why are these discussions arising all the time?....

There is only one true path to follow, and that is the AmigaOS4 road!

The news remind me of old UNIX war between System V and BSD. Various UNIX flavor battle each other, therefore MS can focus their marketing and won the battle on desktop market!

I remember AT&T statement: "UNIX is not for PC! You must buy large computers, ie NCR". PC market is insignificant :)

HP-UX is an old enemy of DIGITAL UNIX / OSF.
It is strange that with HP-COMPAQ (and DIGITAL) merger, they become part of a single company. :)

Yeah, that's an odd statement.  It's good to see, but what is the problem that they cannot cooperate?  Let's hope that both sides get things worked out and the Pegasos is fully "Amiga approved" by the time OS4 hits the consumer shelves.

It's a real shame that they have to battle it out in public.  Instead of concentrating and resolving the issue, they have to let the public know they are just darn kids who won't budge and bicker about everything.  Tsk tsk tsk.  Heck, I've seen those comments posted on ANN--including Petro and Bill's.  And beside that, MorphOS sucks.  Sorry.  I'm still sticking with AmigaOS no matter what!   :-)

Sorry, but Amiga Inc have terms for getting AmigaOS4 running on hardware legally, and they are clearly available and everyone knows what they are: hardware ROM to prevent piracy, and OS comes with the motherboard. How do they expect to cooperate with Amiga Inc if their employees are posting confidential business emails all over the internet?

It all strikes me that one side (Bill Buck and Co.) are being very vocal and unprofessional, whilst the other side are keeping out of it except to refute some of the more spurious claims that have been made.

Lets just say that at least one side appears to be getting real hardware and a real new OS to the Amiga market, and the people involved are reputable (Eyetech, Hyperion). Of course, Pegasos looks nice if it ever gets shipped, and I can't comment on MorphOS, but both of these products have been promised for a long time as well. So delays hit both sides, making the attacks last year on the AmigaOne delays extremely hypocritical in my opinion.

So my last words: actions count, not words. :)
