Anybody know who's audio chip is in the A1? I have seen plenty of "all in one" solution x86 boards with a CMedia CMI8738 audio chip in them, which is the same chip I have on my $15 sound card right now. (not bad for what I paid, and it has front, back, center and sub channels). If its the same chip, I can already use my sound card in an A1! (cuz I doubt that the A1 has 3 stereo-out jacks for surround sound as well as the mic and line in jacks.)

Cool none the less...its got good things on board that you don't have to worry about working with OS4 cuz its specifically designed for the board. Very sweet indeed.

Very impressive.
Didn't know that bit about IBrowse, MUI and the
font stuff. Good to see a comprehensive recapitulation
of what's up. And from the parent company
nontheless! Considering the opening sentences of the executive
update, Amiga is indeed skimming the community comments and
listening intently. If you see this guys, you should know
you have my full support for your current strategy!

I think this is some of the best news we have heard in a long, long time.  While I too would like to see the Amiga OS become totally hardware independant, I suppose we have to wait for a bit.  After all, Rome wasn't built in a day.
However, all the news about the improvements in the software is encouraging.  I have always liked IBrowse.  If it is updated with modern features, that is a big bonus.  I must admit my skeptecism regarding the rebirth of the Amiga is starting to fall away.
The hardware support is also encouraging.  Legacy support for the floppy drives but more importantly, SCSI which I still think is a better system though it will go away on grounds of cost.  The addition of USB, an integrated TCP/IP stack for modems and ethernet cards, and PCI /AGP slots are beautiful things.  It looks like we may have finally turned the corner.

Those hardware specs are starting to look decidedly last year. What about G5 / USB 2 / 4x AGP etc?

In effect, the A1200 will be like just another graphics card plugged into the PCI bus of the AmigaOne.

What can I say but COOL :-D  My only concern is when I can download the first beta of OS4.0 for my AmigaOne board. Buggy as hell or not, I want to be able to use it ASAP.  :pint:

Adasha, it may not be cutting edge but it is enough to do everything you want to do.  It is far more cutting edge than my old A3000, which continues to do most of what I want it to do.  Once they get money from sales of the low cost A1.5 G3 motherboard, they can invest the money to design/build more current hardware.  Have a little faith man!

If I was a swearing man then I would probablly say HFS too!!

I don't think I have ever had a week like this!

What with BB2 and a new version of BlizKick minutes later!  Now MUI PPC and IBrowse 2.3...ARGH!!!!!!  Stop!!!!!!

Ten years of waiting...HFS.

This is pretty encouraging. I wasn't thinking of getting one, but the details in this update are tantalising enough to tempt me.
All we need now are some decent apps to go with the decent OS and we'll have something worth shouting about again.
What apps will be available for the new OS? We need an office suite at the very least, some gfx software would be nice too. What else?

man, this thing is sounding better and better....  ( maybe i'm just drunk? )

i'm fed up with os's that require enormous amounts of resources to do basic stuff...

right now i'm on my ibook ( g3@600mhz - same as Aone.5) and macos9 DOES get a little slow sometimes... I can't for the life of me understand how an OS can make up 3-400 Mb!?!?! ( yeah, yeah, win2000 is approx. 1 Gb - but that's just bloatware!... maybe i'm just drunk? )

I want a simple OS that doesn't take up ALL of my harddrive and that I can fix IF it crashes or burns!!!... maybe i'm just drunk?

-phloe ( hey! I AM drunk!! )

There you are, Adasha.  A big part of the problem is that there hasn't been new Amiga hardware production in over eight years, but perhaps as big a problem is that for a small manufacturing run, trade-offs must be made between the computer employing cutting-edge tech and not costing a fortune.  Clearly all involved are doing the best that they can, and there is the further difficulty of allowing for a fairly generous amound of legacy hardware support.  Remember the uproar in the Mac world when the first iMacs eliminated all legacy hardware ports?  Imagine what would happen if the same course was taken with the A1!  It'd take a nuke going off to surpass the sound of the screams of protest from the die-hard Amigans! :-D

I've yet to hear any prices attached to the A1, so we'll have to see how well they were able to balance all of the above concerns, but if you truly want to see bleeding-edge tech AND an Amiga OS to run them, join me in cross-fingered hope for OS 5!

Yep, we are getting out of it, if the slowdown was even enough to technically be called a recession.  It'll take a bit, but the comeback is on (curiously, just as it FINALLY looks like Amiga is coming back.  Coincidence?).
