Toaster 2000 & OS3.9 and other toaster questions....
« on: April 15, 2009, 04:17:28 PM »
Hey Folks,

I just picked up an A2000 w/ a toaster 2000, GVP030@33mhz/4mb , 2mb ram card and a TBC for real cheap!

I ordered 2 more GVP simms & a spectrum card for this machine from Software Hut. still waiting on that.

Questions:

-Will the toater 2000 software still run under OS3.9? I pretty sure when I add the spectrum that should free up my chip ram for the toater?

-Do you need 2mb of chip ram if I wanted to add a Toaster 4000?

-Will the slower 2mb zorro ram card be a bottle neck on the rest of the system? I will have a total of 12mb of ram on the GVP card when that arrives. that may be enough for me with the added 2mb of video ram from the spectrum.

Yes, Toaster software will still run under OS3.9 & KS 3.1 - I've done it with Toaster 2.0+ software.

If the Spectrum works as the Picasso and these other cards, yep... you'll inherit more chip ram  :-)

Toaster 4000 is not recommended for use in an A2000. Slower performance and nobody needs that! There are also some AGA specific routines that you would not be able to use obviously. And according to BBOAH, looks like Toaster 4000 might require 2mb chip. Then again, it says that about the Toaster 2000, which I'm pretty sure I've used with 1mb chip before, but could be mistaken. Can anyone confirm you do indeed need 2mb chip with Toaster 2000?

Yes, 16-bit Zorro ram WILL hinder your 32-bit GVP ram performance wise. Yank that puppy and sell her to someone that could use it!

@save2600,

OK, cool! thanks for the tips! the toaster 2.o software runs with 1 mb chip ram right now. Is there any reason for me to ever upgrade to later toaster software? Does it add anything for a Toaster 2000 user?

I'll probably sell the 2mb zorro card really cheap or just give it away after my new ram shows up. It can take up to 8mb if any one could ever find the chips for it!

Hi,
you'd better add 1mb chip for your toaster, nor you'll get some nice message telling you that you lack of chip...
If you use VT software v4.x you'll really need these 2mb of chip and more than 4mb of fast.
I know I have  ;-)
Keep the Faith !

@CLS2086,

I'm going to have to get by with 1mb for now. Those megachips for A2000 still go for way too much money!

The Spectrum & GVP ram was already a lot more then I wanted to spend on this :lol: I only got the spectrum cause
I wanted to be able to use RTG friendly apps on a nice screen mode. I have a giant 27" NEC multisync for the native Amiga/toaster display.

The toaster is cool but I'll probably only use it for old school effects/transitions for my band stuff.

You will want to go to at least VT3.5 software with a VT2000 card, LW 3.5 is exellent. Upgrading to VT4.x will not be much of a benefit as far as card functions. I does allow some use of the flyer functions for still image framestore slide shows. AGA related functions will not work, I think this includes ToasterPaint AGA features, but TP will still function and display the image to the Toaster frame buffer in 24bit.

I slapped together a A2000 with 1meg chip, 8meg fast and a SupraTurbo'28, VT2.0. It ran, one app at a time. LW crawled/crashed. The CG app (Character Generator) refused to load large page files. Unpractical even from a minamalist point of view. An '030 with 16 megs ram is sufficent, but the VT really needs 2 megs of chipram, an '040 and 32 megs of fast ram to function nicely. NewTek didn't support past Amgia os3.1, recommends 3.0.

I managed to score a MegaChip for less than $45 delivered.  ...and yes, it was through EBay. Matter of fact, most my Amiga aquisitions have been through EBay.
