Pioneer CD-ROM with A2000HD
« on: September 12, 2003, 06:56:50 AM »
Hi all, I had a spare Pioneer SCSI 40x CD-ROM lying around and I thought that it would be a great if I could get it working in my A2000HD. I installed it, set the SCSI ID to 1, hooked everything up, turned my system on, and nothing, the HD led just kept flashing on and off, unhooked the CD-ROM and it all worked fine again, BTW HD is set to ID 6 and I am using a A2091 controller. I then tried my external SCSI ZIP drive, set it to ID 5 and the same thing, the system just sat there doing nothing. Any advice or am I wasting my time. Thanks in advance.

Adam

I doubt you're wasting your time.
Have you checked the termination?
Try the CD drive, or the Zip drive alone without the HDD, tell us what happens.
:-)

It is terminated at the HDD, via a jumper, didn't think of trying the devices on their own, will do, thanks :-).

It should look something like this:

[Terminator] - [CD(1)] - [ZIP(5)] - [HD(6)] - [Controller(7)] - [Terminator]

I think, will double check everything tomorrow.

To adz:

The Boot hard drive on a Commodore A2091 SCSI Controller card should always be set to device # 0.  Also, what revision is the Western Digital controller chip, 03, 04, or 08?  I think that a 40X CD-ROM drive may be too modern for the classic A2091 card.  Try a slower drive, like a 4X to 16X.  Make sure to check for terminator resister packs plugged into or soldered onto the drives logic board.  Some CD-ROM drives have a jumper for disabling the termination.  Also, are the resister packs still soldered on the A2091 board, near the 50-pin SCSI connecter?  You have to remove them to get the rear port to work properly.     :-P

I don't get your logic "DoomMaster", you think that a slow drive with slow SCSI card is somehow better than a decent speed CD drive with a decent speed SCSI controler.

Trust me. I have an old GVP SCSI controler that is about 13 or 14 years old, it still works fine, and should work with some pretty fast CD drives out there.
I don't see anything wrong with our modern(ish) hardware.

Well, I got it working, the CD-ROM anyway, will worry about the ZIP drive later, now all I need is a file system and I am right to go. On another note, would I be able to boot from the ZIP drive if I got it going?? Thanks for everybody's help. :-)
