Amiga FORTRAN compiler with documentation?
« on: March 09, 2009, 06:53:40 PM »
I purchased one on eBay a while back (A/C Fortran), but it was completely dead.  I had to return both the disks and the full documentation to get a refund of my $15-20.

FORTRAN remains a major computer language in the physical sciences.  In fact, most massively parallel work on national supercomputers is done in FORTRAN.  Of course, such work will not be done on an Amiga, but I am very comfortable with the language, and small numerical tasks are quickly and efficiently coded and accomplished with this language.

Edsger Dijkstra remarked that "The use of [d]COBOL[/d] FORTRAN cripples the mind; its teaching should, therefore, be regarded as a criminal offense."

Computer scientists have always hated FORTRAN, and any other language with a GOTO statement.  But computer scientists happen to be notoriously incompetent when it comes to numerical modeling, an area where FORTRAN code is direct and useful.  As for COBOL . . . no comment.

I learned (or was in the process of learning) Fortran77 on a Cray Y-MP/2E back in 1991 as part of a high school project.  Was pretty neat.  That was at the same time I was being taught COBOL and RPG-II on an IBM System/34.  Ugly stuff :-)

Only the cool kids program in FORTRAN!
