internet connection through serial?
« on: February 16, 2009, 09:06:03 PM »
Hello!

I have now successfully hooked up my A500 to my pc, with amiga explorer... Its such a nice program, and works so great, i couldnt belieave it when i read about it :)

Well, after reading a bit, it seems like you could get a simple tcp/ip connection through the serial with amiga explorer?

Maybe even run a simple irc-program or something?

That would just be awsome! But maybe its not possible?

You can run SLIP or PPP for a full IP connection if you can find a package that provides that for Windows and an appropriate client (you'll need a whole IP stack, likely) on the Amiga end.

There used to be a Windows package, popular among Psion and Palm users, that did this "easily" -- unfortunately I can't remember the name.  I also have no idea what Amiga Explorer does or doesn't provide in that regard -- I assume it's only a file transfer utility, but haven't looked in years.

With even more fiddling, it may be possible to use PLIP over parallel ports, which I gather can well outperform the maximum rate on any stock Amiga serial port.

Oh gee, that takes me back, when I could get Console access on dialup to a Linux (Shell) box for $5 a month, but TCP was $15.

The Brainless sysadmin left compile access open to all users, so what happened ?, SL.IP was compiled in to the Kernel  :)

That got me 6 months of GUI web access at a severely reduced rate, SLIP in stead of TCP.

And not to tip them off, I was UUencoding binaries through Email.  LOL, you should have seen the size of their email spools.

http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=40122

You can check out the post I made linked above.  Using this program running on the PC you can telnet/IRC from any serial terminal program on the Amiga.  (using a null modem to link the two)

If you wanted to go all the way, you could install a TCP stack on the amiga and do SLIP over the null modem.  But the above software is much easier, and worked great for Telnet.  Didn't try IRC, but it mentions it in the documentation.

I think you're looking for this :

http://www.amigaforever.com/kb/13-106

you don't need amiga forever for this to work, what you need : a PC with internet connection configured to have internet connection sharing, and a serial link between amiga-pc.

what you need is a router/switch/hub with RS232 port.
although most will tell you that port is for configuring router, there are some devices out there that use it as dial-up and similar.

(back then some LANs were connecting to internet with dialup!)

IIRC, alternatively you could hack palm pilot cradle. (there is a peripheral for old palm that gives it Ethernet over RS232)

both solutions are much harder to find and more expensive than nullmodem cable, though.

I have been trying to get this to work for years. It is fully supported in both amitcp and genesis. BUT, it has never worked!!! There is no step-by-step guide, and i haqve literally tried EVERYTHING. At this point there is no hope of ever getting it to work.

Sorry, I wish it would work...

You can connect your a500 to a "PC" com port via a serial null modem cable and simply dial in.

Some people beef up their a500s though to make this option more practical as you'll encounter alot of hurdles with on both software/hardware sides.

I used a bone stock a500plus with 512MB fast, an a590HD to boot from with Amiga OS 2.05, Miami 3.1 TCP/IP stack, configured to dial into the "PC" com port. Then ran the Amiga Internet Apps through a proxy setup.

Don't waste your time with this method though, its just simply too painstakingly slow.

I tried it with my a1200 and it overall seemed ok, achieving 56k modem transfer speed.

If you're still interested though, I have the FAQs and drivers.

It works, but it's veeeeeeery slow, even through the paralel port.

What wrong with having  512MB of FAST memory.

I just have an extremely FAT agnus addressing chip... haha.  :-o

Or you might just want to plug a 56k modem into your serial port, install Miami and AWeb or the like and access the web this way.

Although I'm not sure whether a standard 68000 cpu is sufficiant to run the browser...
All the best,
