My mute Miggy
« on: January 30, 2009, 02:04:34 AM »
Can I play any kind of misuc files on my A2000 with no sound card? CD Audio, MP3's, or wav files?

I've tried a couple apps from Aminet and they appear to need a sound card.

Yes.  Under AmigaOS 3.9, you can set the AHI preferences to use the Paula Audio mixer.  It takes a bit of processor time but will play back up to 14-bit stereo sound using the Paula chip on the motherboard.

KatManDEW:

First things first, your GVP '040 probably isn't fast enough for MP3's. My WarpEngine '040/40 can only play one or two MP3's (Low Bitrate, BTW) Even the '060 can't handle all MP3's (high bitrate, or VBR)
I assume you have the audio cable connected on the CD-ROM? I am not too familiar with the 2000, not sure if it has a connection for the CD's audio output, or not... If not, you'll need some sort of mixer, etc. OR, Asim CDFS which can play audio through the Amiga's built-in audio.

I have a suspicion that some of the apps. you tried don't need a sound card per se , but may need AHI installed. (Think of an RTG system for audio) For .wav's , Play16 does nicely (Aminet)
Maybe start off with something simple, DL a MOD player and some MODS... (You still may need AHI, though)

I managed to play MP3s on my 25 MHz 040 Amiga 3000, with no sound-card. It was a bit of a hassle back then. First of all, the bitrate should certainly not exceed 128kbps. Secondly, a lot of FAST RAM was required. Thirdly, the use of a fancy player like AmiAMP (or how was it called, that WinAMP clone for the Amiga?) was not done (nor were you able to use any other program). I must say that the A3000 had a PicassoIV at that stage.

The process was something like this:
- close all programs.
- start a SHELL.
- find the MP3 to listen at.
- copy it to the RAMDISK:
- then play it via a commandline MP3 player (can't remember the program, I do remember it took loads of toggles to customize playback).

To speed things up, I once wrote a little ACE-BASIC tool that created scripts to handle the tasks of copying, setting the toggles and play the music. Each song got its own script.

Get a SAM, while you can! The new AMIGA is here!

I have successfully played 14bit VBR mp3 files on my 25mhz 040 PPC A1200 with 64MB ram. without using the ppc...
it had a horribly low output volume. but it worked, at quite nice quality for a 8bit sound card made in 1992, never intended to play mp3 files... :-D

Amiga_3k and pyrre: Cool! If any of you could give details on how to play mp3's on an '040 Amiga, please let me know... I'd love to get my 4000 / warpengine playing more than just 1 mp3 ... but most of my mp3's are higher than 128 kbps..

I've found SongPlayer to be the least demanding of all the players available, though you're still pushing it on an 040. I think it has a direct-to-paula option so that you don't need AHI (but I could be wrong). Newer versions of SongPlayer though need more power seeing as it was rewritten in C, and hence less optimised. I think 1.59 was the version I used, but that's just from memory.

The BEST mp3 player for classic amigas is Prayer2.

http://aminet.net/search?query=prayer2

I can play mp3 files on my A1200 030/50MHz with Prayer2 (1/4 freq, mono).
With A1200 040/50Hz I can play most(all?) mp3 files with 22050 freq (1/2,mono.)

Converting mp3 to 8svx(iff) or even mp2 is best solution amigas with low-power CPU-s.

I guess I never really thought about how horribly slow even our accelerated Amigas are...

I tried SoundPlayer, but it didn't work at all. The documentation mentions an installer, but there is no installer with the two versions that I downloaded.

The two versions I downloaded are;
http://aminet.net/mus/play/SongPlayer-mor.lha
http://aminet.net/mus/play/SongPlayer.lha

I haven't figured out how to use Prayer2 yet, so I don't know it it's going to work for me.

Thanks for all the info!

I've always used mpega.library and either the console mpega or a gui-version of it. That's worked very well on my 040/40.

I think amplifier works decently well too, as long as I don't do anything else at the same time.

@marcfrick2112

What accelerator was this? I wasn't been able to do VBR on the 060, but i tested a 320kbit worked flawlessly with libmad_mpega and amiamp.

mike- , well my '060 (s) are both P5, a 1260 / 50MHz on my 1200T and a Cyberstorm Mk3 on my 4000T. And actually, I can't play VBR MP3's on my '060's either, but I can also play 320kps MP3's.

KatManDEW: sorry to hijaak your thread  :-D  And, did you try to add an assign for SongPlayer to your user-startup? For some odd reason, that's the only way I could get it to work...
(e.g. my assign looks like this:
ASSIGN SongPlayer: Creative:Sound/SongPlayer/

I thought perhaps a different decoder might handle vbr but i haven't bothered anymore, p5 here also btw. Which have you tried?
