CD-ROM problems , HD partitions lost after file copy
« on: November 18, 2008, 12:11:04 AM »
Hi all...

Just got a very weird problem ...

I wanted to copy a complete cd-rom to my harddrive with Directory Opus 4.12, this went ok untill it was finisched...

My boot partition was corrupt and got a No Dos error after reboot.

So i put back my backup from ZIP disks and retry'd everything again, same story ...
I also try'd Asim CDFS and IdeFix drivers and ... same.

But installation programs (like StormC and WB 3.9, wordworth..) and CD32 cd's run fine.

Can somebody please give me a hint where to search for ?

My setup :

Amiga 4000, Warp Engine with 040 @ 50 Mhz, 128MB Fastram, SCSI ZIP and CDROM (on warp engine), 40GB HD, CyberVision64,XSurfIII ethernet OS 3.9 and a PAR
A4000T, 060@50mhz,36Gb scsi, 128 mb fast cvs64-3d, inidivision, x-surf, deneb usb. Gotek
A1200, 030@40Mhz, 16gb CF, 128 mb fast, ethernet, indivision, RapidRoad
A500, 2,5mb fast, 512kb chip, a590 + 8gb SD (scsi2micro-sd) and internal gotek

You didn't mention the most important:

The HD size and how it is partitioned.

 Advise:

Make a small boot partition (300Mb is almost an absurd space to that partition).

Then make a Work partition (can be up to 1Gb), if your HD is big enough.

Then make a 1.9Gb Games: partition (yeah!), and use the leftover as you want. Files, music, work data, animations, etc.

 Just two more tips:

 1. any partition who pass the 4Gb border must partitioned and formatted using the OS3.9 HDToolbox.

 2. Use preferably SFS instead FFS for those partitions.
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

What you could also try is copy the CD via the shell.
Start a CLI and enter:
copy CD0:#? all clone quiet

If this doesn't trash your HD, then it might be a Dopus problem.

Directory opus 4.12 is fairly old. The 4.x version is now under the GNU General Public License.
Jacek Rzeuski GPL releases of DOpus contain new features and fixed some bugs. You can find version 4.17  here.

4.12 wasn't probably Y2k compliant?

Not weird at all. Either your device driver or the filesystem is not 64bit offset compliant, and accessess past the 4GB will wrap, overwiring the RDB and partitions below the 4GB mark.

Thanx for all youre help, it's realy appriciated!

I have 2 partitions over 4 gb, 4.7 to be exact. And yes, tryed to copy my cd's to one of them.

Right now i'm schrinking and formatting those partitions to see if it works ok now.

The partitions where created with WB 3.9 exept for the boot partition (this one is 400mb) since i upgraded from WB 3.1

I think that DirOpus is not the problem, my download folder is on a big partition and use DirOpus to unpack archives when done browsing the internet on the same drive.

That's nonsense. Not the partition size but the partition location is the problem.

Kickstart 3.1 can only access storage which is in the first 4GB of the drive.

Imagine the partition diagramm in HDToolbox. Think of a red line 4GB from the left side. Everything to the right of this 4GB mark cannot be accessed without special software, no matter how big or small partitions are.

OS 3.9 comes with this special software, but you have to use it. It does not apply itself magically.

Boot from the OS 3.9 emergency disk, run HDToolbox, go to Partition Drive, click on Add/Update and update FFS to version 45. Or use SFS instead.

After a reboot the partitions above the 4GB border should be accessible safely. Use Check4GB to be sure.

If you boot the HDD with WB 3.1, all the partitions which cross the 4GB border or are above it should show up either as NDOS or not at all. That's correct because they are not accessible at this time. You need OS 3.9 to access them.

Bye,
Thomas

Well, checked some things...

The results :

The FFS version is correct it only occurs when doing a huge copy from CD, single files go's well.

When i copy from cd-rom to zip or DH0: (DH0 < 4gb limit) it go's well, and if i copy from DH0: to dh3: (above 4gb limit) it go's wel to, but from CD0: to DH3, then some partitions gets corrupted.

So my gues is the CD-ROM or SCSI driver, at the moment i use WarpEngine.device and registered IDE-FIX software. (mostly for CD-32 emulation)

Low the maxtransfer value (using HDtoolbox) on each partition to 0x001FE1 or lower (less than 8kb each chunk). Must cure the bad behaviour when transferring large files.

Using an odd number for MaxTransfer does not make any sense. Block size is 512 (0x200), so you should use a multiple of it. Also 8k is a bit too small.

Good values are 0x20000 (128k), 0x1fe00 (less than 128k), 0x10000 (64k) or 0xfe00 (less than 64k).

Bye,
Thomas

Whether and how the partitions get corrupted is all up to luck.

If you try long enough with enough data you will also manage to corrupt it by copying from DH0, too.

What does Check4GB say about the DH3 partition?
