Is this hard drive set up ok for running OS4 in my A4000?

Hi Guys,

I've finally obtained and put an 18.2GB Ultra Wide SCSI drive on my CSPPC. I'm booting into OS4 with the A4000. But before I start filling it with stuff, would you kindly take a look at these screengrabs and tell me if everything looks correct for OS4 and the best performance of the drive?

I don't own PPC hardware, but friend of mine tried to install OS4 for classic (A4000) and he was nor satisfied. Speed issues, program crashing and so...

But, maybe that was just his experience...

You did not make a screenshot from the "Add, remove or edit filesystems" page. You have to make sure that FFS V51 is in the list with identifier 0x444f5307. Otherwise you won't be able to boot from a DOS\7 partition.

Other than that the setup is completely ok. This will be an OS 4.0-only setup. No dual-boot 3.x / 4.0

I'd recommend using SFS for at least some of the partitions - when writing files particularly it's orders of magnitude faster at times, though you can probably tweak it to be better with FFS.

I'm very happy with my Classic AmigaOS 4.0, BTW. Speed and reliability both excellent (standard 604e@200 128MB RAM, Voodoo III on Prometheus, Deneb). It's only the RAM limitation that's a problem.

Having said that my XE gets more use, naturally.

Thanks. Could the whole drive, including the boot partition, be set up with PFS3 as I use that in my IDE drives? I've always used the file system 'pfs3ds' (direct scsi). Would this be the correct file to use on an Utra Wide SCSI drive?

After learning from Framiga that with CTRL+ALT+ALT you can do a cold reboot, I am indeed considering a dual-boot system. Could you tell what changes I would need to make to the small partition DH2 for it to be able to have OS3.9 on it?

(All partitions are Blocksize 2048, Buffers 600, Maxtransfer FFFE00 and Mask FFFFFFFE at the moment)

at the boot ffs partition, check the long filenames.
i think that 2048 block size it's a waste of disk space in amiga.
(but i'm not a hard disk/filesystem guru  :roll: )

I had huge crashy/bootup problems dual-booting with FFS v51 on my OS4 partition. Ended up using SFS and things are much more stable.

Your milage may vary.

personaly i haven't got any trouble using ffs v51 for os4 boot, and sfs 68k
for all the other partitions, at my 3.9 and 4.0 dual system.

This picture only shows the identifier (DOS\7) it does not say whether this identifier has an actual program connected to it (L:FastFileSystem 51.10).

at the boot ffs partition, check the long filenames.

DOS\7 *is* "long filenames". That's the difference between 3, 5 and 7: 3 is international, 5 is directory cache and 7 is long file names.

Could the whole drive, including the boot partition, be set up with PFS3 as I use that in my IDE drives?

pfs3ds could work. pfs3 (not ds) does not work on partitions above the 4GB border.

PFS3 is 68k after all. For OS4 you should switch to SFS which is PPC native. (But you still need the 68k version of SFS in the add/remove/update section, just like FFS above.)

SFS sounds like a good file system for OS4.

I like PFS3 because the 'pfsdoctor' util has *always* managed to repair the dreaded sight of partitions showing as 'HD1:Uninitialised' without any loss of data.

Can anyone comment on recovery success when using SFS?

If I were to go with pfs3ds for the whole of my OS4 Ultra Wide SCSI drive, what would be the correct Blocksize, Maxtransfer and Mask figures please? Would long file names be a problem for the boot partition as the identifier number is 0x50445303 (this does not end with a 7).


Would you also kindly look at these screengrabs which show how I have been using PFS3 to run OS3.9 in an 8.4GB IDE hard drive. Do the figures look correct? Would I change them for OS4?

avoid PFS3 on AOS4 (it uses TD64 while AOS4 uses NSD).

I've "been forced" to slowly get rid of all my PFS3 partitions, thanks to AOS4 ;-)

You could use the td64patch but i wouldn't if i were you.

Use SFS 1.279 and you will be able to use AOS3-AOS4 and MOS without any problem

i don't know how pfs3 works but, 3 years now that i use sfs i never had these kind of nightmares :-)

Me neither, I am using it for ~7 years now without any trouble (i.e. SFS for 68k though).

EDIT: and SFS for aros-i386 lately, since you can also use SFS on the boot volume with Grub2.  ;-)

i am using the 68k version too with amiga os 3.9 and os4.0 classic,
and the morphos version at the pegasos.
