AmigaOS changelog of sorts?
« on: August 28, 2003, 02:00:35 PM »
I couldn't think of a decent subject for this topic, but there seem to be quite a few questions regarding what key features came in with different versions of AmigaOS.  Maybe someone should compile this info onto a few web pages, or into pages on that wiki site that was advertised recently?

Things like when hard disk support was improved, when CDFS support came in, etc.

There's a small page on the wiki here, but that also links to Workbench Nostalgia which seems to have it all.

Hmm, that nostalgia page has reminded me how butt-ugly AmigaOS has always looked by default, mainly in the fonts department :-)  The only version that doesn't make me immediately think that is 1.3, despite 4 colours...

And people are complaining about OS4's default theme?

What - you're saying that you don't like topaz? :-o  :-)

I'd like to see an OS1.3 theme in OS4 - to give an idea of the continuity and for some nostalgia.  Besides, all GUIs seem to look almost the same now - white, blue, black and orange would make a nice change :-)

Topaz is the default font for 1.3 as well :-)

One thing is the ultra-dreary colour scheme by default on >v2.

Admittedly OS 1.3 suffered from a lack of standard on icon design, but by default the icons on >v2 are horrendous, IMO.

From what I've seen of the default theme on OS4, I quite like.  It's a reasonably good-looking default.

Noo.. 2.0 looked really great when it was released! :) Modern "3D" look and stylish grey.. it was great then.. not that I'd think same way nowadays :)

It was a different topaz, though :-)

If you want a proper changelog, download the NDK archives, they have changelogs.

The 3.9 NDK is here.

Thanks, but I used the word changelog for lack of a better one, I didn't mean replicate exactly what changelogs look like.

Just somewhere where users can be directed with confidence that the question will be answered regarding what has changed between OS versions.  That website (the nostalgia one) covered quite a few things, though didn't OS 2.x have 2GB disk partition limitations, and OS 3.1 having 4GB limitation?

2.x and 3.x had 2Gb partition limit, and a 4Gb hard disk size limit, afaik.

Sorry,  pVC, I see it exactly the opposite way.

OS 1.3, where I started was viverant, really alive. Icons were what you wanted them to be. (Some went overboard, to be sure.)

If I haddn't got to know and appreciate the power of the applications I used (& still use) at work I probably would have dropped the Amiga OS based on the look & feel of OS 2+.

The default colors (or lack of them) are like trying to find stuff in a fog bank and the blocks around the icons strangle creativity. (I remember some folks made one pixel icons and let the boxes do the rest.) I tried every box remover utility I could find.

I like Eric Schwartz's pallette for the Magic Workbench icons. As he put it, at least there is -some- color with it.

New Icons & Glow Icons improved things. Anything to get rid of the square icon handcuffs.
Best,

Bob Kennedy
